Adventures of the Amazing Screw-On Head

I’m a huge fan of Hollywood’s best kept secret, Bryan Fuller. He’s had two unusual sitcoms that networks just didn’t understand and an audience was never allowed to build up. I suspect that his coming out of the Star Trek team as a producer/writer has him stereotyped as a geek or nerd or who knows what. I guarantee you he’ll not be kept marginalized for long. And there is no way that smart money hasn’t noticed this guy by now.

I recommend getting the DVD’s of both series’ for a great time. The last show was the incredibly charming Wonderfalls. It was unfortunately on Fox, so they killed it before it had any chance of success. They aired four hilarious episodes and kept nine in the can and cancelled the show. The DVD has all 13. It was about a girl who worked in a gift shop and inanimate objects (with faces) would talk to her and tell her to do things. One of the funniest shows you’ll ever see.

The other show was a Manny Patinkin starred show on Showtime called Dead-Like Me about a girl who was forced into becoming a grim reaper after she was killed from a falling toilet seat that was a piece of space debris from a space station.

Now there is this offbeat and incredibly stylish animated series on Sci-fi network. They are airing the pilot on their website.

Interview of Fuller on Suicide Girls Website linked here. You can see how his often harsh cynicism would grate on execs at Fox and elsewhere. In fact this “attitude” is perfect for today’s audiences. They should fire anyone who doesn’t get this guys material…kind of use him to test people.

  2. Improbus says:

  3. Eideard says:

Mark Cuban continues to thumb his nose at the media barons/stiffs — he’s debuting a weekly news show, this autumn, with Dan Rather.

  4. Moe says:

Wow! i watched it for 2 minutes and then i couldnt look away! This is amazing stuff. Funny too weird sense of humor

  5. Vietnam War Hero says:

That might be one of the most original shows I’ve ever seen, and I loved it. I hope it gets picked up, because I’d watch every single episode. Thanks John.

  6. Mr. H. Fusion says:

Well, I guess I’m the spoiler. I thought it stunk. I quit after ¼ the way through. There was nothing to get me interested, let alone keep me interested.

  7. GregAllen says:

I’m in my late 40s … am I just the wrong generation for this? I suffered through about three minutes and then tried sampling some of later segments.

It didn’t make me laugh even once.

  8. GregAllen says:

I should add my ringing endorsement of Wonderfalls. They showed the whole series on Star (also owned by Murdoch.) and it was funny, quirky, campy and well-written, well-cast and well-acted. (No wonder they cancelled it!)

I assume was a spoof on Joan of Arcadia (which I never saw) and other self-important spiritual shows of the time.

Here is the IMDB link to that series:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361256/

This series reminded me of the campy and charming “Maximum Bob” (starring Beau Bridges) which was cancelled after one season on ABC in 1998 which was a spoof on the lawyer and police dramas of the time.

  9. Mr. H. Fusion says:

Thanks Greg, at least I’m not the only old fart that didn’t understand it. Hey, what ever turns your crank.

  10. Bibiana says:

i love the show Dead like me; Quisiera saber cuales son sus fuentes de inspiración, en que se basó para hacer la serie, es un genio, es tan conmovedor talvez porque soy latina y católica también Bibiana

  11. Secretary says:

In the old days all that was died and only a tombstone was left. Today with the NET the best of life will go on forever, but so will the worst that mankind has created. Hopefully Bryan will produce more of his belief and put it upon the screen and for those who fear his works of art and cancel his shows, Mother will take care of them.

    Secretary
