What is Al Gore doing wearing all black and then bowing both left and right with that cornball whatever-it-is-called clasped hands deal? An eye-roller. He appeared on the Daily Show Wednesday to pitch his movie and book.
At the end he swings his arms way back as if he’s going to jump in the pool. I thought the whole thing was odd.
I just caught the Daily show with Mr. Gore and I saw nothing strange or weird about his entrance. Yeah, the clasped hands thing is not common but it appeared to me that it was more of a thank you in response to the applause more than anything else. He could have waved or bowed and gotten the same point across.
The third frame capture that John put up showing Mr. Gores arms swinging backward was the extent of his arm swing. I didn’t see them go back any further than in the picture. Normally if you are going to jump forward your knees would be bent in preparation for the “jump.”
What John has effectively done is used these frames out of context in order to try to bend the reader’s opinion of Mr. Gore to align with his.
I don’t necessarily agree Mr. Gore’s positions, and I am not defending them.
I am however calling into question Johns motives in pulling 3 frames from the show and adding subtext to them to try to make people believe Mr. Gores character should be questioned because of some simple gestures.
John if you don’t like Al Gore or don’t agree with his positions then why don’t you address those issues instead of using your sophomoric insinuations and your sorry attempt at humor about his character to try to drum up support for your blog and promote your twisted views on the world?
I guess I have grown to expect this kind of post from you though.
Why don’t you try to use intelligence and tact to gain acceptance of your opinions instead of showing your ignorance for a change, you might have better luck.
#32, PC. Anyone and everyone is fair game here. I like Gore and feel he is doing some good in the world. But, if we can (and do) knock Shrub, (aka, his highness King Georgie) then Gore is also open to criticism and ridicule. You do make a valid point, but who cares about facts when it is a liberal being criticized?
Great Job John!
Journalism at its best 🙂
Apparently PcMonster has a special TV without a blue or green gun (hence the rose colored view of the interview).
You think Dvorak bent anyone’s attitude about this extremist? That is hardly likely. That’s like saying that he can convince a Pat Robertson fan that he is ever wrong. I watched the interview out a sense of fairness and a grudging feeling that I should listen to the “other side”.
I wound up with the kind of embarassment that I feel when I watch The Office (UK or USA) or Extras – both hilarious when it is fiction, painful when it isn’t. I kept wondering whether the interviewer or the interviewee was going to orgasm first during the televised mutual masturbation session.
#35 Dale, you and Dvorak watched the same interview, but came away with somewhat different impressions. According to you, it was a “televised mutual masturbation session,” but by John’s account (#3), Stewart was “quite skeptical about all this and seemed unimpressed with the Gore global warming alarmism.”
Now you see why impressions like these really don’t carry a lot of weight. Sometimes people see what they want.
What kind of man is this? Trying to help other people, and using all this ‘verified bonified scientific proof’ to make his point. What kind of white American male gives a shit about anybody other than himself?!!!?!
I love how so many of the preceding posts ripped on Al, George, and so on — but didn’t talk about Big Al’s topic: the planet, or at least many of its inhabitants, are in severe jeopardy.
Set the politics aside people, focus on the science and the future. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.
#36 Gary – too true.
#37 Big Al – the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
“the road to hell is paved with good intentions”
No. The road to Hell is paved with bad actions.
Read your Bible.
This is bull. I do not dislike Gore and hope to chat with him sometime. I did think this bowing and scraping and the arm swings (he did that twice!) was a little offbeat and (as someone mentioned) Steven Seagalesque as in pretentious. I was personally put off by it. And by virtue of the fact that Stewart NEVER held up the Gore book at the end proved to me he was a bit dubious too. I have a post I’ll produce on this, but let me tell you in advance. When Stewart likes the guest and the book he holds the book up to the camera and often keeps it held up. From there, depending on how he feels, he’ll hold it and drop it. Or hold it for a split second and slam it down when he doesn’t like it. These are codes I have documented. With Gore he never lifted the book!!! Wow. A first.
?????????
None of this make a bit of sense. Not an iota of sense.
I watched this show when it first aired. Nothing Al Gore did was abnormal, so he did a little Buddhist nod, and his arms were extended because he was sitting down.
Jon Stewart is brilliant and has a great show. But…why would you think he has anyhting againt Gore and his ideas. Really, everything former Veep Al Gore stands for is what Jon Stewart stands for, if you know what they stand for.
Take the Iraq War. This is one of Stewart’s strongest points and issues. Al Gore was one of the very rare major politicians to be set against it from the beginning. And Gore has been consistent.
Jon Stewart has never expressed any skepticism about the climate change issue.
Jon Stewart just may not be the most talented and skilled interviewer. I think this is true, I am a big fan but he just is not the greatest interviewer.
If Stewart was not so enthralled, you know maybe he was tired or off base for the day.
I can’t help but be amazed at how many people concentrate on the irrelvant issues like choice of clothing or mannerism and ignore the actual issues under discussion.
I doubt Al Gore will ever be president but I think he’d make a good one.
Re: Johnny-Cakes (Comment 11): Mark D. VandenBerg is probably refering to Al Gore’s interview by Grist Magazine in which he says:
“I believe it’s appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is.”
In the same way the left interprets “overtop the levies” as synonymous with “levy breach”, the right is interpreting “over-representation” as “biased distortion”.
I suspect that Al Gore will run for President and is courting China. Could Al Gore sell out this country anymore that King George. That would explain the Commie type plain clothes and Asian greeting. I suppose he could let another country invade us and that might be worse than Bush, oh wait Bush is doing that with Mexico. No difference then, other than Gore will probably ban all SUV’s execpt those owned by his family and other high ranking Demo’s.
I feel sorry for Hillary, Gore just upped the ass kissing standard with China quite some bit. What can she do to one up Gore or Bush, what was the difinition of sex according to B.Clinton?
Thank God the voters of Palm Beach County had the wisdom to protect us from this guy.
>voters of Palm Beach County had the wisdom to protect us from this guy
You mean the wisdom to vote for Pat Buchanan by mistake?
Nice observation on Stewart. I’ll have to watch for taht with other books. I just find it hard to believe he disagrees on this issue.
The real Inconvenient Truth for Al is the actual level of emissions. For the US the increase was about .1%, much lower than these European countries trying to stick to Kyoto guidelines.
You know, Gore did invent the Internet.
#17 old dug…..what if’s are a dime a dozen….if you face the facts, they are simple ones…no matter who was President on 9/11….they would be at war today. The American public wouldn’t have tolerated a Clinton asprin factory or goat herd response. Not when 2800 people were blown to hell in three very public places in this country.
Conduct of the war may be a matter of debate….but a war there would have been.
As far as who here or any where for that matter who is doing more for the planet…..another simple answer….one hellava lot of people. People who fight daily for all kinds of changes in how we humans treat the world we live in, people who aren’t travelling from one book signing to another by jet plane, polluting the hell out of our skies, people who aren’t jetting to every country that will have him for 250,000.00 dollars a pop(can you say….Saudi Arabia, England, France, Germany, Japan etc., etc.?), people that aren’t motorcading around in 10 mile to the galleon SUV’s, like your idol Al Gore. A street bum who recycles cans and plastic for his next bottle of booze or meal does more than the illustrious Al Gore does for the enviroment. Global warming is a fact, wheather or not humans contribute to it is still being fought out by people a lot smarter than you or I, but one fact is that 1 jet trip by Al Gore from New York to London for a book signing or T.V. interview spews more pollutants into the air than you and I do in 3 years of driving (in my case a Honda).
As to Al….well….he has come very close to the edge since losing the 2000 election(or winning, but losing, depends on your point of view), I would tally the weight gain to medications, anti-depressants can do that.
what is wrong with you ?
what difference does it make if he waves this way or another ? as long as it’s not a nazi salute, I I don’t give a damn
more generally, I’ve spent 15 minutes reading this blog: it’s uninteresting and filled with anger against practically everything and everyone… you’re basically like an old fart watching TV all day long and loudly, dumbly commenting on everything
anyway…
#39 Odyssey67 – I meant what I said and I said what I meant. I don’t need no stinkin’ bible.
#50 stefan – I’m not angry. I do hold a long standing grudge against Al’s wife for using her position as the wife of a government official to support censorship (see also, PMRC). Some people say she wasn’t that big a supporter, but she is the top name listed on wikipedia. Also, you’re right. I do watch a lot of TV, but I wasn’t yelling and dumb is relative. If you weren’t referring to me, please be more specific in the future.
