Scientists respond to Gore’s warnings of climate catastrophe — Can we agree on anything? Well, I guess we can agree that Gore is making money on this movie of his.

Gore’s point that 200 cities and towns in the American West set all time high temperature records is also misleading according to Dr. Roy Spencer, Principal Research Scientist at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. “It is not unusual for some locations, out of the thousands of cities and towns in the U.S., to set all-time records,” he says. “The actual data shows that overall, recent temperatures in the U.S. were not unusual.”

Carter does not pull his punches about Gore’s activism, “The man is an embarrassment to US science and its many fine practitioners, a lot of whom know (but feel unable to state publicly) that his propaganda crusade is mostly based on junk science.”

We are having one of the coolest junes in southern ind that we have had in a while. nights 60 days 80. This global warming is working for me.

  2. Anon says:

Al Gore shouldn’t be making any money peddling half-truths. That’s Ann Coulter’s job.

  3. Tom says:

Bob Carter is an Exxon-funded PR hack:

    http://www.exxonsecrets.org/html/personfactsheet.php?id=1134

The truth is that the only climate “scientists” that aren’t convinced about global warming are those paid by the oil industry.

  4. prag says:

that would be Dr EXXON and Dr Mobile who disagree that global climate change is happening.

  5. Barry Kelly says:

The slashdot article on this pretty much debunked it as energy industry propaganda.

  6. RTaylor says:

By the time there is conclusive evidence things may be very bad. It takes an autopsy to conclusively prove a cause of death, but that isn’t much help to the corpse. Sometimes anecdotal evidence is all you have to work with. I’m not saying Gore isn’t an airbag looking for a spotlight.

  7. Johnny-Cakes says:

Yes, look at the source of this story for God’s sake…sheesh. Look at the website as a whole. Are you fricken kidding me? We’re suppose to take this seriously?

I mean, come on…at least give us this story from Fox news or something a little more credible. And I’d never thought I’d ever call Fox “something a little more credible” either.

Come on John, we all know you can spot these bullshit stories…why waste our time like this?

  8. Tim Harris says:

Yea. Be for certain that Gore is collecting money from good ‘ole hydrogen and the DNC lobbyists. Big oil has its enemies, too. And in this world, anyone will try to one up anyone else. Here is a criteria stick that I use.

If such and such is in front of a television camera, thats politcal money. If they are in front of Good Morning America or some crappy propoganda channel like that, thats lobbying money. If they are making movies, well. That’s Skull and Bones are some secret society hoping to popularize their owl god or something like that.

    Don’t trust moving pictures, PERIOD.

  9. Steeph says:

Tim Patterson, quoted in the article, also writes and speaks for techcentralstation.com:
The Tech Central Station Science Foundation received $95,000 from ExxonMobil for “Climate Change Support” in 2003.

Yeah, come on John, we expect more of you than to quote the oil industriy’s paid hacks’ self-EXXONerations verbatim. You wouldn’t quote tobacco industry ‘scientists’ on lung cancer wouldya? Having said that, I’m 99.99% certain that 82% of your posts are ‘fair and balanced’ 19 times out of 20

    ;P

  11. —- Is Gore Full of Crap Regarding Global Warming?

Well yeah. That isn’t new to you is it?

  12. ab cd says:

Gore said he is going to exaggerate things to scare people into action. These scientists are treating global warming as a religion, and all disbelievers should be thrown out of the community. When they get caught with bad facts, they just ignore it or accuse the messenger of being funded by big oil or something else. Guess what, one of the biggest pushers of the Kyoto Treaty was ENRON.

  13. Erik Elferink says:

If you want a clear picture of what is important from this issue read ore vieuw Lucian’s editorial (he is the host of dailyplanettv and an expert on predicting the future based on large emperical data) he did a week or so ago
Lucians editorial on global climate change tekst version ore checkout his vidcast about the subject.

He made it clear to me that based on the behavior of large systems like the global climat it does not mather if the climat change is brought on by us or is natural what does mather that the little we can do about is can be enough to tip the scale either way.

  14. Tom says:

Dr. Exxon and Dr. Mobile know whats best.

  15. moss says:

Cripes, John. I wonder what color helicopter these guys think is flying overhead at night? Black camo?

  16. Jim says:

John – so now you’re a PR flack for Exxon?

  17. Frank IBC says:

While we may be in the middle of a warming trend, temperatures are still lower than they were in the “Medieval Warm Period” 700 years ago. No oil (or “oil company flacks”) back in those days.

  18. bilzebub says:

OK, since global warming isn’t happening, then I guess you Yanks will let us keep our sovereignty in our mythical ‘Northwest Passage’ – a sea route through the North that could only come about if the icebergs all made like the Evil Witch of the West and cried “I’m… m-m-melting!”

    See: http://www.cbc.ca/north/story/passage-northwest.html

  19. Slimlemon says:

Many of the readers of this blog spend lots of time DISENGAGED from the natural world (i.e., outside) – spending most of their time sitting in front of a computer.
Maybe that’s the reason for the vitriol aimed at Gore, who has apparently spent a lot of time engaged in thinking about human effects on the “outside”. (Do you really think this guy has spent years schlepping around a laptop and projector giving talks for the money?)
Life on this planet will surely go on long after we humans are gone. Just too bad that we’ll take lots of other species down with us.

  20. Anon says:

That article is crap. The author is an Exxon stooge. And, Al Gore isn’t making money off these so-called “half-truths.” All profits from the movie and the book are going towards programs to further the cause.

  21. gquaglia says:

The facts are: no one really knows. The Earth works in very slow, very long cycles. We simply haven’t been here long enough to know if warming is manmade, or simply another Earth cycle.

  22. Mike Voice says:

9 Be for certain that Gore is collecting money from good ‘ole hydrogen and the DNC lobbyists. Big oil has its enemies, too.

The enemy of my enemy may not be my friend?

    say it ain’t so… [grin]

  23. BBerge says:

The credibility of anyone using the phrase “junk science” is suspect. The scientific consensus on global warming is that global warming is happening and it is a result of human activity. The only people that I’ve noticed using the phrase “junk science” are big business propagandists, religious fanatics and their media apologists.

This Carter person is using the Big Lie strategy to discredit Al Gore and anyone else that might interfere with Exxon’s short term profits. I guess Exxon has to make as much money as possible now before their oil refineries located in coastal areas sink beneath the sea.

  24. faustus says:

gore is a boob! a stooge of the highest order! engaged in thinking about the outside world and not in front of a computer screen? the idiot was not only in front of a computer screen but working the phones from his vp office raising illegal campaign funds from little old buddist nuns! our government is rotten to the core, both partys, period. we will never no which side is right become they control the funds that fund the research and its all political as are the stoogles that pretend to play it out.

  25. Frank IBC says:

Do you really think this guy has spent years schlepping around a laptop and projector giving talks for the money?

He’s not just “schlepping around a laptop and projector”, he’s thousands of miles each year in private jets, consuming incredible amounts of non-renewable resources and spewing unbelievable amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

  26. moss says:

Watch out for the chemtrails, too, Frank.

  27. todd anderson, iii says:

if gore is wrong, some people lose their jobs, and some factories produce less pollution.

if all the jerks who refuse to believe that human pollution might just have the ablitity to alter global weather patterns in ways detrimental to the human species are wrong, our children and grandchildren fry to death or suffer an epidemic of melonoma.

  28. V says:

The movie is pure demagogery. Gore isn’t a scientist, he’s a politician gone activist. I saw the trailer. Yes, this is happening, GRADUALLY. The movie dramatizes it because nobody really cares what’ll happen in 100 years. Tell them it’ll happen tomorrow and people may get start paying more attention.

Regardless of global warming cleaner energy is to our advantage. The first step until we find an alternate (no, not hydrogren) solution is greater efficiency from gasoline engines. Considering how much I’m going to pay when I finally stop putting up filling my gas tank, I consider that a good thing.

  29. Frank IBC says:

That still doesn’t prove Gore is right, Todd.

  30. Erik says:

What are all you people who think that global warming exists using computers for? Your adding to the problem that you say exists! Get off of the Internet and save some energy!
