TV Coulter and Carlin — I’ve already set the TiVo for this one. My prediction: will turn into a dud non-event. It’s a longshot, but it could be fun.

“Tonight” host Jay Leno might want to consider wearing referee stripes on Wednesday’s show when Ann Coulter and George Carlin are his guests…

Coulter, author of “Godless: The Church of Liberalism,” has drawn fire for attacking the four New Jersey widows who pushed for an independent commission to investigate the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attacks in which their husbands died.

In her book, Coulter accuses the women of “reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.”

  1. John Paradox says:

Carlin and Coulter? We’re looking at about sixty minutes of -bleep-

    J/P=?

  2. Mike says:

What’s to quibble over? They both make a career out of saying controversial and oftentimes inflammatory things.

  3. ab cd says:

Why would they be opposed? Carlin is famous for defending people saying outrageous things.

  4. John Wofford says:

Like a miner you have to sift through Carlin’s smelly piles of feces to find the tiny shining gems of wisdom he labors so hard to hide. I don’t like him because the little prick picks on fat people, and just by looking at him you can see he’s never had to fight the fight that millions of us have to fight everyday.
I can’t watch it because I’m in the middle of yet another spat with my TV, refusing to watch it ’cause it all sucks. Like Springsteen said, two hundred channels and nothing on.

  5. Johnny-Cakes says:

Awwww…poor John Wofford…did the big bad comedian pick on fat people? Poor baby…here, have some more pie. There, doesn’t that make you feel better? That’s a good boy. Want another piece? Here, it will make you feel even better. I’ll put some ice cream on it too. Evil comedian…doesn’t he know how hard it is for us all? Oooo…I have chocolate chip cookie dough ice-cream! Let’s get triple-scoops of it with our pie! Now…what were we talking about? Oh yes, Carlin is a prick for picking on fat people…..

  6. Peter Hill says:

A few times I made the mistake of listening to George Carlin while riding on public transportation during rush hour. I think I scared some people by my semi-random choking down of laughter.

Sure George doesn’t hit it with every joke, but what comedian does. I like the fact that he tells it like it is.. Perhaps that is why Lewis Black is the other comedian represented on my iPod.

  7. Gamabunta says:

Sure George doesn’t hit it with every joke, but what comedian does.

    Mitch Hedberg.

  8. Roman Berry says:

They’re just another example of Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Hmmm. So Coulter is right that these women really enjoy the fact that their husbands/fathers of their children were killed on 9/11?

As far as BDS, you might want to look at some polls. It seems that Bush supporters are the ones who are deranged.

Anyway, this was supposed to be about Carlin/Coulter. I hope it’s entertaining. I’ll be sure to watch but in truth I expect Carlin, if he interacts with Coulter at all, to be (for him) low key.

  9. ken ehrman says:

coulter and carlin are clowns just like maher, howard, rush, o’reilly, etc. anyone who values what these people say as anything other than entertainment deserves to wear a dunce cap for following a clown.

what’s important though is that we have freedom of the press and freedom of speech, and if coulter wants to besmirch american war dead’s widows to sell a few extra books, that is her right.

  10. Carlin, at his peak, was a profane genius. But as witnessed by his last HBO special he’d suddenly gone from and angry 60-year-old man to a doddering 90-year-old man preoccipied with his own looming death. And his eyes are suddenly dead. I’m afraid the fireworks will not be what we hope for. Maybe coffee will help him. Dunno.

  11. Eideard says:

I agree. It’s like the last year of Lenny Bruce’s life. He was so obsessed with the crimes against his free speech [in Lenny’s case], he forgot about humor, ignored comedy.

I couldn’t make it all the way through Carlin’s last special. It was like watching Dennis what’sisname.

  12. Roman Berry says:

John, the thing that killed Carlin’s funnybone was his decision to give up wine and weed. No, I’m not kidding. See, the theory goes like this: If you’re drunk and/or stoned, you can look at the insanity in the world and find a way to laugh at it. But come off of a forty year bender and wake up to the fact that all this sh*t is real? That would be enough to sour anybody.

I think Carlin still has his genius, he just has to find a way to tap into it without the aid of alcohol or THC.

  13. Johnny-Cakes says:

The thing is Ken (#10 above), Carlin admits he’s a clown, the others actually believe the crap they’re spouting and are dead serious.

I’m a huge Carlin fan. Always have been and I’ve actually seen him 3 times in concert. But having said that, his shows have gone from funny/profound to just a grumpy old misanthrope.

Hey, maybe book him on Cranky Geeks!

  14. Sounds The Alarm says:

    Will Coulter get naked?

  15. catbeller says:

Carlin’s wife died about two years ago. they were married, what, forty years. Believe me, that will take the life out of you. It’s called being alone.

Hm. Godless man, married 40 years, happy, well adjusted, funny. Evil woman, unfunny, liar, sleeps around, vicious and deceitful, miserable and a misery to others, made her millions on the Arkansas project for Mellon-Scaife lying about Clinton’s crimes for six solid years, apparently cracking up.

    Godless 1, fake Godful 0.

Carlin will filet the bitch. The only people who think she’ll make any sense are that solid 29 percent who think Fox shows news every day.

  16. Milo says:

    “Will Coulter get naked?”

Those boob job scars are probably hideous.

  17. Carlinator says:

George is brilliant, but you have to be above average to understand him. Since the new average is actually below, WAY below average — then about 80% of the population won’t understand what he’s talking about. Forgive them, to pick on them for being stupid is like picking on a retarded fat kid, and we Dvorak readers are above that.

Still, he regularly sells out auditoriums, and has the respect of far more people than say: Bill Clinton, Dan Quayle (remember him?), and El Presidente Bushwhacker.

  18. joshua says:

I love Carlin. Having seen video’s of past performances, it is noticable that he has lost some of his zip. But as someone said above, there most likely won’t be any flare ups as they both make their living being outragous.

Oh….I’m not part of the 29%….but if you actually read the part of Coulters book about the *widows*….you will see that she is only talking about 4 of the 9/11 wives. And I agree with her, and felt the same about them even before Coulter ever brought them up. These 4 woman have made a veritable business out of their *widowhood*….they all recieved very large insurance payouts as well as huge settlements with their husbands companies plus goverment indemnity and now demand and get large 6 figure amounts everytime they open their mouths. Part of their *act* is bashing Bush. Stateing that it is Bush’s fault that their husbands were killed. Ummmmm….I wonder how that is, since he had only been in office 9 months.

Most, in fact almost all of the other widows get quite angry at what these 4 woman say and have publically stated on m,ore than one occasion that the 4 multi-millionaire widows do not speak for them.
If you really look at these 4 woman, you do get the impression that they *wallow* in their husbands deaths.

  19. Neal Saferstein says:

    George Carlin for President!

    Neal Saferstein

  20. Mr. H. Fusion says:

… These 4 woman have made a veritable business out of their *widowhood*…

And Bush and company have made so much more out of the death of 3000. Bush has miked 9/11 for everything with no respect for those who lost their lives.

Coulter is just tilting at windmills because it will “cause some controversy”. She is an abomination and should have been in Barbara Olsen’s seat.

Carlin is a comic. His job is to make people laugh at his jokes and feel good about themselves. Coulter is a clown who makes most of us feel ill with her comedy routine.

  21. Mark T. says:

I have set my TiVo for the event. A liberal libertarian hippie atheist comic against a religious ultra-conservative lawyer pundit, a more unlikely face-to-face match up you are likely to ever see outside of Washington. Both love to expound their point-of-view and neither is afraid of speaking their mind on any subject. And both have an open disdain for self-aggrandizing politicians and opportunists.

And don’t think Carlin is just a clown. His shows are endlessly rehearsed and every word is meticulously picked for maximum impact, polished if you will. He is a wordsmith that argues his point by humorous absurdity. Coulter attacks head-on with the ferocity of a high dollar corporate trial lawyer. And, like any good trial lawyer, she will never ask a question without knowing what the response will be. That way, she can knock it out of the park. It should be very interesting indeed.

In a head-to-head match unrehearsed confrontation, I would give Coulter the slight edge due to the fact that Carlin likes to plan out every sentence far in advance. I think Coulter will be lighter on her feet.

    It should be very entertaining.

  22. Milo says:

    “religious ultra-conservative lawyer pundit”

Well I see you’ve bought into it. What kind of a religious woman would be her age, unmarried and with no kids? Unless she’d taken up holy orders.

Anyone with the IQ of a fern can see her political positions are feigned.

  23. joshua says:

Geez Milo….now woman need husbands to be religious? A bit condensending don’t you think?

Her political positions are real enough and she’s glib enough to emasculate most men who try to pin her down verbally.

I think she is over the top very often, but she is smart enough to know what she has to do to stand out and make a name for.herself. And she dosen’t want people like you to like her, that would depress her book sales and speaking prices.

  24. George of the city says:

#10 these ”War widows” have made a good living besmirching the president. But I whould defend there right to that everybodys out to earn a buck. All sides will do that here.

  25. Johnny-Cakes says:

So…did anyone watch it? I don’t have a TV (haven’t had one in 3 years), so I couldn’t watch it. It would be interested to see how it came out though.

  26. Milo says:

joshua you say her positions are real and created to make her money. I rest my case.

  27. Mark T. says:

Milo, I agree with Joshua. What does Coulter’s marital status have to do with her religion? You have to be married with kids to be a good Christian? What does that say about Mother Teresa?

Johnny-Cakes, the show airs tonight (Wednesday). You still have time to head to a friends house to watch if you want.

  28. joshua says:

#27 Milo…you should rest your case, but not because of anything I said….but because it’s wrong….like it can be quite often.

Of course she tries to make money…..is that something you have objections to? Or do you live off the largess of others? Maher, Franken or any political commentator or comedian is not just in it for the glory, but also for the cash.

In this world of 30 sec attention spans, if you have something to say, you need a gimmick to get people’s attention for that 30 seconds. I have no reason to think that Coulter dosen’t believe everything she says about the left, just as I have no reason to disbelieve everything that Al Franken says about the right is not how he really feels. They both have their gimmick.

  29. Zuke says:

Just watched Carlin and Coulter on Leno. Carlin’s stand-up was a weak littany of tech-speak = not funny. And despite all the hype they didn’t get into any verbal sparring. Not one freekin peep outta George. Disappointing on both fronts…

  30. It was ridiculous in every way. The subtext by Coulter that liberals are gutless was pretty much proven.

She is the creepiest thing out there. Scary.

Her publicist obviously stacked the audience too. She was getting weird attention and applause for mediocre commentary. This probably accounted for the lukewarm reception for Carlin I suspect even though his bit was not funny by any means he usually gets a better response.
