What’s happening to the youth of today?

Poll: Beer Less Popular Than iPod on Campus

Hold on to your barstools. The iPod has surpassed drinking beer as the coolest thing on campus, according to a survey conducted by a market research firm that specializes in tracking college students.

Apple’s wildly popular portable-media player was cited as the most “in” thing by 73 percent of some 1,200 students polled in March by Student Monitor, topping a list of activities and items that included pub crawls, text messaging, downloading music, and working out.

“What’s interesting about this survey, though, is that it shows music-enabled phones are not about to replace the iPod, or other MP3 players, among young people,” he said. “And that is the audience phone makers are targeting with their new handsets.”

  1. Higghawker says:

    My guess here is that the phones haven’t caught up with the storage yet? I will admit that I have a phone with 2 GB storage, and I still use my 20GB iPod daily! I don’t have any idea why I don’t use my phone more for music? Weird???

  2. Richard says:

    That’s it. The country is going down….

  3. Eideard says:

    I wonder if it holds true on campuses where there a tradition of drinking good beer — as opposed to the Bud Lite, etc., crap?

  4. Bryan says:

    Well, I’d be willing to wager a lot of money that had they polled more people at the Pennsylvania State University [my alma] that BEER would have reigned supreme

    It’s beer – HOORAY BEER!

  5. I find it totally funny that working out is last on that list. Go figure

  6. name says:

    iPod parites must be so fun! Imagine all your friends with their ear buds on listening to their own playlists… The introverts are winning!

  7. gquaglia says:

    I’m sure M$ is happy with this news. Steve Ballmer looks like he did his fair share of beer drinking when he was at college.

  8. Uncle Dave says:

    Why would Ballmer be happy their competitor is winning?

  9. joshua says:

    #5….I couldn’t find the list…..though *working out* may not be all that popular, I’m betting cycling, running, and hiking are on it.

    I saw a lot of iPods on campus at Oxford, but beer drinking and pub crawling are still number 1.

  10. JSFORBES says:

    Hmmm…

    Beer = good

    Ipod = good

    Beerpod = great?

    Back to the lab!

  11. Bryan K says:

    #10 – What we need is some integration – One of those keg fridges with some LED displays to show the temp and maybe one for a play list

    Man the kids like that stuff, right?

  12. gquaglia says:

    Uncle Dave, you are either being sarcastic or really stupid.

  13. Uncle Dave says:

    gquaglia: I’m being serious. Why would Microsoft be happy that their competitor is doing so well? Or were you being sarcastic?

  14. Ben Slater says:

    how come we have a post with no conspiracy theories? am i still reading dvorak.org?
