This may be a mistake, a trial balloon to get a reaction… who knows? Or could it mean a whole new direction for Dell and Apple? What do you think?
“Apple OS X” appears on Dell’s driver downloads
Well, isn’t that unusual? Dell offering OS X driver downloads on their site? Hmm. We know you want it, Mike, but somehow we don’t think your company has Jobs in your pocket quite yet. Give it some time though, we’re sure he’s bound to come around now that he’s in the PC business, himself.
P.S. The drivers listed on Dell’s site don’t actually appear to be files for use in OS X, so for now we’re chalking this up to Dell-related error. But see for yourself, why don’t you?
Wait a minute. Dell sells a lot more than PCs these days. They have their own branded versions of nearly every peripheral imaginable. I think it’s easier to believe that Dell is offering OSX drivers for say a Dell DJ or a nice LCD monitor.
Eli (1) has a good point – of course, I heard an interview PCMag did with Micheal Dell where he said he’d like to be able to put OSX on his computers, and now that Apple is letting you put Windows on their hardware, why not OSX on Dell’s?
In a world that things may never happen, I think it’s more like what Eli said. Dell does make a large array hardware that a user may need drivers for on a Mac. The idea of Dell possibly running OSX though seems a bit far fetched. Although it is easy enough to build a system to run it, my first thought would be that in the past Apple has always been very guarded about what hardware their OS runs on. I don’t think it would be a bad choice for Apple financially, but it will detract from one component of their business which is the computers they sell. Albeit that is only a small part of their business, I’m not sure they would want to hang themselves out to dry by letting other companies use their OS. All we can do is wait and see.
I want 1 more option….
NONE of the above…INSTALL NOTHING…
DELL,
is becoming the RADIO SHACK…..
Use other NEW devices and put YOUR name on it…
I just hope it will.
For one it will cheapen the use of a computer carrying MacOS.
Second, it will make it so popular it will encourage the development of viruses for macOS and will shut the mouth of the macheads and their “macs don’t have viruses.”
I can’t wait to see a mac computer ladden with spyware.
Amazing — Usually trial balloons or mistakes get “fixed” in 14 hours — but I just went to Dell’s site and sure enough, this option is still listed there! I took screen captures for good measure!
There’s no mystery here. They sell peripherals that work on OS X. Their Web app isn’t smart enough to know that the thing you’re looking for drivers on is a computer and not a peripheral.
Wouldn’t it be great if Dell just brought out Apple and re-brand Apple into another line of computers that Dell is offering? This would increase Dell’s market share to include the 2% Apple niche, which are the true last holdouts. Also, Dell would no longer have to make the products that are getting creamed in the competition with Apple (Dell DJ), perhaps even offering Dell’s superior and cheap LCD monitors with the Apple Cinema design.
The design influences of both Alienware and Apple can take over the generic Dell design and Dell can offer more enticing offerings to the last segments of computing market that Dell has not been able to overwhelm and dominate. And…being the only company that can offer full native support of Pocket PC devices for Mac OS X…that would certainly drive some competitors to innovate their products to do better or offer other better functionality.
Imagine…all Dell computers being able to offer pretty much any Operating System and different computer lines to suit the design look of different users, probably driving down the costs of computers running Mac OS X with full driver support for all these OS’s.
Eh…who am I kidding…?
Thank you Dell!
I want an Dell printer driver for my mac, not some mostly-compatible guesswork. Thank you. Where’s the mystery?
