A former high school teacher facing sexual assault charges says his arrest on suspicion of having sexual relations with a student violates a fundamental right guaranteed by both the state and federal constitutions.
Matthew Glasser, a former music teacher at Northwest Catholic High School, was arrested last year under a provision of the state’s criminal code that makes having sex with students a crime, even if the student has reached 16 – the age of consent.
“We believe that the statute infringes on a fundamental right to sexual privacy and therefore does not hold up under constitutional scrutiny,” said Jeremy Donnelly, one of Glasser’s lawyers.
Is it really wrong that I like that photo that accompanies this story? That’s wrong isn’t it? I can never tell these days so I’ll just assume that it’s wrong that I really REALLY like that picture.
What the hell, if catholic priests can get away with it, why not catholic teachers!
Doesn’t the age of consent apply only to people 21 and under? Once you’re over 21, the age is 18. I have no idea how these laws work.

5. Yup. He had a consensual relationship, and he’s toast. This are our generation’s versions of the witch trials. Good luck with challenging hysteria, Mr. Teacher. You’re up for torture by rape for the next ten years. Then you get beaten by people on the street who know your address from public records.
Even if she pleads with the judge that she had consented, her opinion is of no consequence. Ya know, even fifty years ago they just would have married each other to dodge the charges, and people would have harumphed and walked away.
You all know that 16 year olds have sex, don’t ya? You don’t think they learn from other 16 year olds, do you? Think.
I think that we as a people have become 1) purient and intrigued by this type of thing, and 2) we’ve become a country of sadists who want to hurt people in torture chambers. If you don’t think prison for this guy is a torture chamber, you are a block of wood.
In closing, I wil say from watching humans all these decades, I conclude that half the population of the U.S. would be in the torture chambers with this teacher, if the hoped-for mind-reading machine comes in to existence. Hell, the fMRI machine is already court certified, and it isn’t even ready yet. The prosecutors are drooling. I imagine the newly privatized for-profit prison system will do unnbelievable business in the coming century as all the “crimes” people commit in their lives are dredged up to the light. Burn the Wytches….
. this crime is one of the most common human vices, indulged on both sides. Like the war on drugs and sex, this is a war on human nature, fought by hypocrites. And for all of those who’d say I’m covering my own butt; no. I just believe in sanity, wisdom, and mercy, three things that Americans have forsaken.
I always thought that the teacher/student relationship was supposed to be non-sexual. Just as a therapist, massage or clinical or psychiatric must be. it shows a disrespect for the guy’s profession.
I had a thing with my English teacher myself, and it did nothing to further my learning….and my respect for him went into the toilet. Everyone knows that it is crossing a boundary that we should all be able to count upon. There are so many ef-ed up ‘Lolitas’ out there that I’m sure it’s easy pickins’. Big Man. I know, I was one. Bored and looking for someone intelligent to talk to.
There are so few relationships where we are allowed to assume trust, that rather than sink to some other ‘professional’s’ level, how about having some standards of our own?
This guy was my teacher and we all though he was cool. Then we found out he had sex with a girl, Dana Bercawiz (last name isnt spelled right) and we lost a great music teacher. I find it funny out the staff at our school, Northwest Catholic High School, is oblivious to everything that happens here. Everyone drinks and smokes weed (exept me and a couple of other people). Also, another student called in a bomb threat in Nantucket because she wanted to stay on the island a little longer. Just google “Northwest Catholic High School Bomb” and you’ll get a couple of good articles. I hate how my school holds itself to be great, but in reality, everything they say is absolutly fake
