Aside from the jive from politicians sweating re-election while the so-called Immigration Reform Bill has been slithering through Congress, yesterday, we witnessed yet another bit of lawyerly sleaze on behalf of lobbyists and special interest groups.

Lou Dobbs caught a hint of this just before the end of his program, yesterday. So far, hardly anyone seems to notice the package of “manager’s amendments” added to this bill before passage.

The Senate took up the last few amendments to its plan Thursday before its final vote, which was nearly a foregone conclusion after a test vote Wednesday to limit debate on the bill passed by a 73-25 margin.

A package of amendments bundled together — known as a “manager’s amendment” — also was voted on just before the final bill went to passage. It was not immediately clear what was in the bill, Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., said, which is why he voiced opposition to the package.

He said that among the amendments was language that would require discussion with the Mexican government prior to construction of border fencing…

He said that while he supports goodwill between the two countries, “I don’t think it’s necessary for us to put a precondition for the construction of any fencing,” Kyl said.

As he introduced the package of amendments, [Arlen] Specter said wryly: “The manager’s package makes sausage look very good.” The measure passed 56-41, and one member voting “present.”

I think it makes pig manure look very good.

  1. Mr. H. Fusion says:

I caught the same thing from Dobbs yesterday. I’m shaking my head in disbelief.

The only thing I can think of is that it was inserted as a poison pill. There is no way it will pass the conference.

Why is our government effectively aiding and abatting Mexican Meth labs? Mexican meth labs are importing tons of this evil drug into our country. It used to be that local law enforcement could shut down local meth labs and have a noticable effect on the problem. Now they are confrunted with a much more expensive and pervasive problem.

I am shocked that our elected officials don’t give a rat’s ass.

  3. RTaylor says:

I have a local ordinance that my neighbor has to approve of my fence abutting his property, as long as it’s visible from his house. Think of this as the international version.

  4. Deuce says:

I would ignore the ordinance if my neighbor’s dog was crossing the property line and crapping on my lawn.

  5. moss says:

#1 in the code of priorities for American politicians is get re-elected. 99% of the posturing, press releases and pap comunicated by our servile press is calculated and contrived to that end.

That’s why we get a Bill that’s absolutely worthless. The stuff they stuck in there to screw us further will stay — like bumping the H1B provisions up to 200,000 a year.

That’s also a given. Take care of the special interests who butter your bread.

  6. John Wofford says:

Why don’t we just make Mexico a state and get it over with?

  7. Legal immigrant says:

United States is a country of Immigrants. When Christopher Columbus discoverd the US, this country had only few people, everyone immigrated in order to have a better future. Law abbiding people deserves to be residents even if they overstayed their visas or immigrated illegaly, but they have to show that they are hardworker and they will abide by the rules of the country. God forgives, why not the government.
If you get pulled by a Policeman because you did something wrong, you pay a fine and you are set to go. why not do the same for these hard workers. Come on, let’s face it, if you are not an immigrant, I am sure that your father or grand or great grand father was an immigrant before.

  8. Mark says:

My grand father did not break the law when immigrating. He did not tax the social/gevernment systems, sucking them dry.

  9. Uncle Dave says:

#8, just out of idle curiousity, what other laws do you feel it is OK to break since obviously you feel it is OK to break immigration laws? Do you feel it’s OK to break into someone’s house and start living there even if you are a “hard worker” at some job? What other laws do you feel illegal immigrants are free to ignore? There are a lot of people in prison who felt they didn’t need to obey specific laws. What make illegal immigrants any different?

  10. joshua says:

#8…Columbus didn’t discover the U.S…..he hit Hispanola instead.

  11. KB says:

“Law abbiding people deserves to be residents even if they overstayed their visas or immigrated illegaly….”

Rephrasing this: “Law abiding people deserve to be residents even if they are not law abiding people.”

Now see how stupid that sounds?

“If you get pulled by a Policeman because you did something wrong, you pay a fine and you are set to go. ”

Actually, no. Depending on what they find, you might spend years in jail or worse.

  12. Teyecoon says:

Immigration is one thing and INVASION is another. Immigration is following the procedures necessary to become a citizen including merging into the culture and adopting the language. Invasion is slowly carving out vast areas of another land and culture to be replaced with yours while taking advantage of the ammenities and services that are provided for it’s citizens. This means we have a serious problem with Illegal Immigration or a problem with Legal Invasion.

BTW, why should all these Mexicans and Cubans be given special “express” citizenship rights just because they have easy access to this country? There are people all over the world who would like to enjoy the opportunities of these border country immigrants so why should we have any litmus test for citizenship for anyone if we aren’t going to apply it to everyone?

  13. bush lover (the beer not the president) says:

” Invasion is slowly carving out vast areas of another land and culture to be replaced with yours ” mhhh, sounds a lot like manifest destiny to me, karma perhaps?
maybe the american natives should’ve built a wall to keep the pilgrims out. and i don’t buy that national security issue crap if that were the reason for building “the great wall of the U.S.” then i would expect another one built for the canadian border as well.

  14. Tom Scott says:

I live in Montgomery County, MD where the government funds illegal immigrant day labor sites – we are awash in crimaliens … I mailed bricks to my senator and representative yesterday.
