Christians Take the Bait, Go into Snit, Help Promote Madonna

The Church of England has criticised Madonna’s appearance on a cross to kick off her latest tour in Los Angeles.

“Why would someone with so much talent seem to feel the need to promote herself by offending so many people?” said the church in a statement.

Madonna performed the ballad Live To Tell while suspended from a giant mirrored cross on the opening night.

David Muir of the Evangelical Alliance also accused the singer of “blatant insensitivity”.

“Madonna’s use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous,” he said.

Dangerous?? How?? Is the church afraid that Christians are going to trip over this, fall, and hurt their feelings?

I really couldn’t give a rip about Madonna, her performances, or her music. But what always amazes me about these stories is how people line up to play the part of Charlie Brown ready to kick Lucy’s football, again and again and again. Don’t they realize that they are doing promotional work for her?

  1. DavidtheDuke says:

You could profit from their stupidity as well I’m sure 🙂

  2. Matt says:

Easy publicity, and Christians are safe to bait. If Madonna were brave, she’d use an image of Muhammed.

  3. Sounds The Alarm says:

    If only!

  4. GregAllen says:

    Offending Chrstians is for whimps.

If those artists like Sinead O’Conner or that PissChrist guy REALLY had guts, they mock the Muslims!

  5. RTaylor says:

Have you ever worked or lived with someone passionate about their faith? Often these people define themselves in terms of their faith. To them it’s a personal attack, and their reactions can be very dangerous. It was only a few centuries ago that Christian authorities were burning blasphemers at the stake. I don’t think anyone believes that the human brain has evolved into a higher form in that short of time. I guess I have the right to walk into a redneck bar in flaming drag. When and if I wake up in intensive care, who do I blame?

  6. JT says:

I agree 100%. Letterman said it best last night… “I liked her better when she was a slut.”

  7. Aum says:

Brilliant headline on two counts. After all these years, are people still getting suckered by Madonna?

  8. malren says:

She’s just boring. So not offensive at all…more like predictably dull.

  9. david says:

    CHRISTIANS OFFEND HUMANITY.

They are getting back what they have sown.

  10. Kamran says:

“Why would someone with so much talent seem to feel…..” I just want to know why the church thinks Madonna has any talent. All she has done is sex books and softcore porn in her videos.

  11. forrest says:

Wow…how is this any different then the typical Madonna of the 90s? She’s always managed to push the envelope and offend people along the way. This is type of publicity her image has thrived on.

Perhaps the organizations and groups offended by her actions should take a different approach and not cry foul to the mass media and public. By them ignoring her, it’s the worst thing they can do to her controversial appeal. It’s interesting that the people that are offended continue to take the same approach repeatedly, as if this particular time it’ll be a different outcome.

  12. mandarin says:

Well at least its better than setting off car bombs

  13. Don says:

I agree totally. Madonna’s primary talent is in spotting trends and exploiting them. By all rights she should be as irrelevant as, say, Cher, but she keeps hanging on because of her talent for keeping her name in front of the public. These protests are self-defeating and I wonder why they never learn.

  14. blastum says:

    Darn. No nails!

  15. Rob X. says:

I thought Madonna was Jewish now.

  16. raddad says:

So…. When can we expect to see the violent riots?

  17. amescreative says:

I agree with GregAllen. People who do this are doing it against Christians because it is safe and profitable. (and I do find it offensive to purposely try to make money by mocking the religion of another.) Of course it’s not just religion. Imagine if someone were mocking anything you held as sacred, or important. You would find it offensive as well.

  18. Randy says:

“Madonna’s use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous,” he said.

I can explain this. If she fell off the cross she might hurt herself, you see? She has no helmet, knee, or elbow pads to help protect her from the fall!

  19. Rich Cox says:

    Rob X,

I thought Madonna was Jewish now.

    So was Jesus.

What is funny is that she is actually equating herself, literally, as Christ.

  20. Gregory says:

“What is funny is that she is actually equating herself, literally, as Christ.”

Er.. no. She is crucifying herself. Crucifiction was around long after Jesus got tied up and was around long before too.

I suppose it could be some kind of statement, but from Madonna I think its only designed to be offensive and attention whorish.

  21. Rich Cox says:

“I suppose it could be some kind of statement, but from Madonna I think its only designed to be offensive and attention whorish. ”

By depicting herself in a Christ like crucifiction. I guess it could have been upside down like Peter.

I guess I am giving her too much credit, and could care one way or another.

  22. OldDug says:

“someone with so much talent”!!!!! What? Who? Madonna?

  23. Angel H. Wong says:

Kiddies, here’s a lesson in Spanish: “Putona” means “Big ho'” And that’s how I call Madonna now.

  24. TKane says:

Pushing the envelope? If she really wanted to push the envelope, she should have done the Mapplethorpe exhibit and stuck herself and her electric cross in a vat of yellow liquid. One show – good bye!

  25. James, age 14 says:

Isn’t this the same one who produced a music video in which she reads a verse from Revelations while being surrounded in flames?? What is it with this lady??????

  26. Sean says:

You see, Christians will lose either way. If we sit back and say nothing, people will assume that such actions are okay, and that we don’t really care. And if we fuss about them, we draw attention to them and encourage them to continue.

Since Christianity has already come under attack lately via the Da Vinci Code, Madonna is just captilizing on that controversy in order to boost her own sales. She is using Christians to sell to non-Christians.

Maybe some of you don’t understand what it means for something to be sacred or dear to you, but if you do then you would realize the dilemma we are in. A greedy woman with no scruples is using the death of the person who you adore more than all else as a way to sell records. To put it into perspective, suppose she was reenacting the death of one of your loved ones to do this.

    Peace.

  27. KB says:

“You see, Christians will lose either way.”–Sean

Sean, trust me, you will lose nothing by ignoring Madonna.
