Yahoo CEO rebuffs Microsoft / Software giant tried to buy a stake in Web portal — Interesing, no? Microsoft gets no respect nowadays.

Terry Semel, Yahoo Inc.’s chief executive officer, reportedly said Thursday that he rejected a proposal by Microsoft Corp. to buy a stake in Yahoo’s search business.

His comments in a Financial Times article publicly confirm a rumor that has circulated for several weeks that Microsoft was interested in investing in Yahoo, a chief rival.

Speaking at an event in New York organized by Syracuse University, Semel said that they discussed “search, and Microsoft co-owning some of our search,” according to the report. But he emphasized that “I will not sell a piece of search — it is like selling your right arm while keeping your left; it does not make any sense.”

A Microsoft spokeswoman declined comment.

  1. ECA says:

considering that MS, bought out GIANT, and then RUINEd their AV and antibot programs…. I wouldnt get NEAR MS.

  2. me says:

So does MS really know what it’s doing in regards to search? How would buying a stake in Yahoo help build their search brand?

  3. Mr. H. Fusion says:

In any case, Semel insisted that Microsoft has little hope to build much of a search business given that it introduced its search engine last year, considered late for the Internet industry.

“My impartial advice to Microsoft is that you have no chance,” Semel said. “The search business has been formed.”

Sounds like Semel is really holding out for more money.

  4. Mike McMurphy says:

Google and Sun form a partnership to promote each others products, is it so rediculous to think that Microsoft and Yahoo could join a silimar venture?
