Is there anyone out there that still thinks the iPod won’t make it?

Sony is moving to make its music management software compatible with Apple’s audio file format in the latest evidence of Steve Jobs’ dominance in digital music.

The behemoth Japanese conglomerate, which once controlled the portable music market, announced on Tuesday that the company’s data compression technology would be compatible with a number of rival formats, including Apple’s format of choice: AAC.

So now that Apple is getting large, when are people going to bash Apple?

  2. jbirkhead says:

Well, AAC isn’t “Apple’s format”. Apple use AAC as the container for their Fairplay DRM. I doubt Sony’s software will have access to Fairplay encoded files.

  3. Grace Molloy says:

Exactly. AAC was created by the same guy that made MP3. the .m4a shell Apple uses is just that; a shell to house DRM. Frankly it’s about time the rest of the planet understood that.

My Nano didn’t come with that accessory. It must ship with the 4G model.

This is like a hidden picture puzzle:

“Somewhere in this photo is a hidden picture of an iPod. See if you can find it!”

  7. neozeed says:

there is an ipod in that picture? sorry I didnt see it.

  8. gquaglia says:

“I doubt Sony’s software will have access to Fairplay encoded files.”

It will if Sony pays Apple for the right to use it.

    gquaglia,

shouldn’t your comment somehow have Bush is King in there somewhere? How about…
Bush made sure that all the foundations are in place for the growth of non-terroistic supporting technologies, and you liberals / commies just want everything free anyway…

And, FWIW, Apple will not license “Fair”play to anyone, no matter how sweet the pie. Apple want’s to have a vertical integration of their entire line of products, and they will sue anyone who tries to take that away from them… They’re like a young IBM / MS / ATT / take your pic… makes me kind of weepy actually.

“And, FWIW, Apple will not license “Fair”play to anyone, no matter how sweet the pie”

#10, who doesn’t even identify himself, I guess because he knows he is a lefty loser. Anyway your WRONG, HP was selling ipods for a while. They were ipods, but they had HP name on them and were getting the profit.

  11. SN says:

“#10, who doesn’t even identify himself”

What are you talking about? Not only did he identify himself, he identified himself by name!

    Ha, ha, ha, ha…..

  12. Milo says:

SN: It’s terrible how reading skills have declined isn’t it?

  13. Mike Voice says:

who doesn’t even identify himself, I guess because he knows he is a lefty loser

As opposed to us lefty losers who do identify themselves by name… 🙂

    who say’s I’m a lefty anyway?

As for HP, they had rebranded iPods yes, but they were still… wait for it… iPODS! Big difference. Also, there was no HP itunes, there was just itunes. Your argument is facile.

You must have gotten touchy cause my comment about King Bush was right on, yes?

SN. I can’t believe you got the joke! Thanks!

  15. Miguel Correia says:

    Nice legs!!

Read my post, I said they were ipods with HPs name on them. Apple licensed it to them and HP got the profit. I guess you can’t read in addition to hiding behind the the tag of “name”

  17. Draegoon says:

Hey, can you gimme the URL of the website you got the picture from?

  18. name says:

    gquaglia,

Can I open a music store and sell music to work with iPods? No. Fairtunes will not be licensed. HP making a few cents selling Apple’s product is not quite the same thing as this Sony AAC deal. Not that Sony gets Fairtunes either, but you still deviated from the topic and then got really really defensive. So in short, you cannot use your iPod anywhere but iTUnes, and you can’t use iTunes Music Store without an iPod. No matter what you think of the HP deal, it was still an iPod and iTunes. No competition, no interoperability. And for the pedants, YES I can rip my CD’s blah blah blah… but, for purchased music with DRM, iTunes is the only place for iPods.

And what’s with this hiding thing? Are we talking about super dooper secret world news here? Geez, it’s a fun blog. Why do righties always get so worked up?

  19. gquaglia says:

“but you still deviated from the topic and then got really really defensive”

Pot calling the kettle black. All I said in my post was that if Sony paid access, they could probably get access. You mentioned me by name and then threw in a Bush comment hand granade on a totally un political topic.

  20. name says:

    gquaglia,

Obviously, I’ve read your posts before, and I was having some F-U-N. Look it up some time. I really don’t care about people’s political views, cause they’re alot like assholes… you know the rest. The real fun was that Apple would never let anyone license Fairtunes. They are completely vertical in integration… and the rest is history…

Besides, you can throw an off topic blurb about me any time! I’ve alwasy posted under name, so go crazy! Here, I’ll help you out…

    Named,
Perhaps you’d like to see Apple open a “soup kitchen”, where they give a dollar or two to everyone who feels that they are making too much money.

    Not bad, eh?
