It was early afternoon on Sunday, April 2, and eight women were competing fiercely for what could only be described as a female gamer’s dream: a spot on Ubisoft’s all-women professional video game team, the Frag Dolls.
It was the final stage of the competition. For a day and a half, the women pitted their skills as hard-core gamers against one another in a no-holds-barred tournament and interview process.
The intensely focused yet collegial competitors looked like they could have been stars in the cast of the teen television hit “The OC.” For skeptics, it raised the question: Are they top-flight gamers or charismatic faces recruited by Ubisoft’s marketing team?

Apart from Morgan Webb on X-Play, women gamers look pretty much like their male counterparts. While there are sexy babes gaming, how serious can they be if they are in shape with unpimpled complexions?
It takes a nerd to love a nerd… much less find them attractive.

So, marketing’s not lying, technically. They just select for appearance before skills, is all.
I love the way the photographer posed them. Looks like he used every over used glamour cliche in the book. I can only hope he was going for camp.
There have been plenty of all female gaming teams for years. But, most of them formed and then got companies to back them. I suppose a company finding girls to be on a team is a new oddity. Only time will tell if they are actually any good. But maybe I should go to the CPL’s summer event and see for myself. 😉
