I’m waiting for the add-on that corrects programming errors and for Microsoft to buy a copy for every last one of their programmers.

Software lets programmers code hands-free

A new speech recognition tool promises to let programmers write clean code without ever having to lay a finger on their keyboard.

The tool, called VoiceCode, has been developed to help programmers with repetitive strain injury (RSI). This is a common affliction for people who spend a lot of time using a keyboard or mouse and causes pain in muscles, tendons and nerves in a sufferer’s arms and back. Some estimates suggest 22% of all US computer programmers, or 100,000 people, suffer from the condition.

VoiceCode lets a programmer dictate code in a more natural way, Desilets says, rapidly translating their utterances into awkward programming syntax. For example, in order to write “if (currRecNum < maxOffSet)" a VoiceCode user only needs to say: "if current record number is less than max offset then". Traditional voice-recognition programs could require nearly 50 individual words to be dictated.

  1. Gary Marks says:

If someone has a certain speech impediment, will VoiceCode write all their program code in “Lisp”?

  2. Mike says:

The example seems rather simplistic to me. How does it account for character case, for example?

  3. Chris says:

    > If someone has a certain speech impediment, will VoiceCode
    > write all their program code in “Lisp”?

And, if so, will the program talk back?

  4. Geoff says:

“Do what I say, not what I do.”

  5. Sean says:

Yeah….. ok. I can’t see myself using this, or anyone I know using it. The last thing I want to do is dictate 5,000 lines of code.

  6. Bill says:

…. all your base are belong to us ….

  7. Bill says:

    > The example seems rather simplistic to me. How
    > does it account for character case, for example?

I guess you speak in a higher tone of voice 🙂

  8. Me says:

If you talk like a retard, it puts out code in BASIC.

If you cough and grunt you get COBOL.

If you fart at it you get C++ (You would need to go all the way to diarrhea to do a dereferenced pointer)

If you vomit on it it spits out Regular Expressions in Klingon
