Blogs ‘essential’ to a good career – The Boston Globe — AGH! Aren’t there enough blogs in the world already??

Blogging is good for your career. A well-executed blog sets you apart as an expert in your field.

So will cats now get all the good jobs??

Most blogs simply regurgitate what’s in the news or what’s in other blogs. Often they will include irrelevant “cheesecake” pictures in order to attract with visuals. The obligatory link to what’s popular on YouTube is another strategy whose only purpose is to increase ratings without providing any content. Often, such blogs have a political bone to pick which they go after incessantly.

    Oh, never mind.

Blogging is bad for your career, says the Corvallis Gazette-Times:

This is not a formula for success, kids. You still need to be an expert in your field to begin with or the blog will just expose you as silly and pretentious.

While I’m in general agreement with the Oregon paper about this, I do think it’s aimed mostly at Oregonians who would probably blog mostly about their “righteous weed.”

Well I live in Oregon.. and I use blogs and”choke” myspace to my advantage and have sold lots of products as well as just got the word out about my products using both.. Guess it depends on what you put into it and the direction your aiming for. Myspace which allows for its own internal blogs and group message boards can attract large amounts of attention it you present your product that way. You can select your target market by location, age, sex, married, single, and lots of other ways to break it down.

I’m in a fringe the music industry, so I deal with bands on a daily basis, and they often ask my opinion about their music even though Im not any sort of a qualified critic on music. Sometimes I feel like its american idol or something.. I just try to be positive and if I note any areas I let them know where I think they could improve.. but reguardless.. They ask me as if Im a critic or expert in the field of music. Which I’m not, I’m just selling a product. needless to say I’ve discovered musical genres such as psychobilly.. and grindcore that I never knew existed a few years ago. My marketing project using blogs has worked great. You just need to take whats out there and figure out how it applies to you. If you dig ditches for a living… blogging probably wont help much. But if you tell people your an expert with a shovel in a blog.. they will probably believe you and respect you as such..

And Oregon does indeed have rightous weed…

so they say anyhow.. I wouldn’t know anything about that really..

John……I just wanted to compliment you on your really great article in the May issue of American Heritage magazine, about San Fransisco, then and now….1906-2006.

Also, I was genuinely surprised to read in the credits of the article that you spend all your time now at the Mauna Loa Observatory, in Hawaii.

I guess you must be trying to locate what dumped that big lump of ice on Oakland(or was it Berkeley?)

  7. I publish 4 blogs each day, and in fact, the photo you see is being “directly linked” from my Kitty’s blog at: http://www.pestbouncer.com
Hey, no problem… I freely share my photos, and I’ll even pay for the bandwith… Well, Kitty’s photo was accessed over 6,000 times yesterday — which is about ten times more home page visits than Pestbouncer.com gets each day… I’m not mad — just jealous…
Yours truly, Donald Kinney and Kitty…
