I supect this is going on everywhere but U.C. in particular should be ashamed of itself since it has been hounding alums for money and crying poor-mouth over supposed budget cuts. Meanwhile it has been secretly paying its own people all sorts of bonuses and hush money. Someone needs to go to jail for defrauding the public. This looks and feels like corruption to me, esecially since the students have to pay more than ever to attend the schools.
This has got to be a horror to the people who try to solicit funds. Good luck with that.
Among the UC violations reported by newspapers were improper housing and relocation payments to top officials on some of the 10 campuses as well as executives in the president’s office in Oakland.
University leaders also were criticized for paying a former UC Davis vice chancellor more than $200,000 per year for two years to prevent her from filing a discrimination lawsuit. The vice chancellor, Celeste Rose, had no defined job responsibilities in her new role.
The worst part is that as the cost of tuition goes up, class size is also increasing. This translates to lower quality of education. As a student it is appalling to see my “major” University (which shall remain unnamed) turn into a diploma mill. Do we still pay taxes for higher education, or has it turned into a for profit business? It seems like the ten plus years I’m going into debt for (along with the many thousands of co-students) should more than pay for what we are getting. The money they make on texts alone is a monopolistic cartel. Sure there are printing costs publishing fees etc. but, its obvious when you pay $100 for a paperback that would cost $15 at “Barns”, that there is something not right!
Nice picture of the medical center. Don’t you think they could’ve toned it down and saved money when they built it? Maybe they could have put in more equipment instead of making the cover look better. I forgot, public medical centers aren’t losing any money (if this place is public).
As to the money at the top. If any laws have been violated they may be able to fire them and seek restitution. But I am sure most of them have covered their rear ends.
Everytime the government hands out more student aid, they raise tuition prices to match.
When I was trying to get some aid in college (after Carter and Reagan took it all away), except by fully paid loans, our government was giving it to middle easterners who would drive off in their nice cars to their purchased or rented houses. I wonder if any of those people whom we educated are working in the nucleur developing countries in the middle east. Boy, that college exchange program between the western countries and third world countries is panning out well.
