Second Life: Your World. Your Imagination. — Here’s another virtual world people are getting caught up in. Apprently this one includes prostitution of some sort with a real exhange of money — for what? We discuss this and other weird stories on tomorrow’s Cranky Geeks Video Podcast

I head about this on April 10th’s TWiT podcast. Right after the podcast, I decided to try out the game. It is amazingly fun. I also like the fact that nothing is stored on my computer and all the data is streamed (no problem for my broadband).

Just to be nice, I decide that Leo Laporte (Pruneface Spatula) deserved 2500 Linden dollars for “referring” me.

Does it seem like some of this time would be better spent in ones real community volunteering, or just making the real world a bit easier for those less fortunate. I don’t think virtual Karma is going to count much.

@RTaylor. There’s no reason why you can’t get involved with people in local groups AND take part in Second Life with people all over the world. In fact, Second Life has many charity sponsored areas and events. What makes Second Life (SL) so spooky is because how well it simulates many aspects of real life (RL), like having its own currency which can even be converted to/from real US dollars. Where’s there’s money you get sex, mafias, estage agents (land barons) and all that kinda stuff. But that doesnt mean you have to get involved in those areas and it doesnt mean that everything can’t coexist together.

The only thing that I don’t like about Second Life is some of the underlying technology. To take an example. If Server A is simulating an island with 100 people, and Server B is simulating another island with 100 people, then (say because of an event) everyone flocks to the second island, then Server B grinds to a halt. It’s not as robust as it could be. There’s still plenty room for another company to setup a fundamentally better system, but for now it’s the best and most fascinating of all the virtual worlds currently available. I highly recommend trying it out.
