Zoe Hinkle thinks her miniskirt is fashionable. Her school’s principal says otherwise.
The fourth-grader plans to hold a rally after school Friday along with some classmates at Streams Elementary School in Upper St. Clair. The girls want to let school administrators know they don’t appreciate being told their dresses are too short.
“I think I needed to say something about it,” Hinkle, 10, said Wednesday. “Freedom of expression should be the style you choose.”
Hinkle claims Streams Principal Claire Miller told her last fall her skirt was too short, and now that warmer weather is returning, Hinkle’s friends are being told the same. The girls were told skirts must fall below the knees, Hinkle said.
this girl also goes to my school. nobody likes her and she’s such a bitch. she wears these skirts with leggins and you can really see her ass with them on. im telling you this girl is really inapproprate and a total freak so you shouldnt be standing up for her. if you knew her you would agree with me 100%.

This Zoe HInkle girl everyone is talking about well she’s in my class. She is not as bad as everyone says she is, but she is provocative and she does think highly of herself. She also isn’t the brightest girl, but we are not all einsteins. Anyway if she wants to act like a bitch then she can act like a bitch it’s her life she’s screwing up.

Apparently this whole ordeal is more than a year old, but the fact it is still be commented on means the issue is a strong one. Does a grade school aged girl have a right to vocally oppose her school’s administration? Should a grade school aged girl wear a miniskirt? Judging by the photo at the top, I would say Zoe’s denim skirt barely qualifies as a miniskirt, so if she’s wearing that and similar skirts to school, I’m not sure what the flap is all about, other than school rules are school rules. As adults, we have a different view on Zoe’s skirt than she does. She sees a cute piece of clothing which she loves to wear. Is she thinking in terms of sexual attraction? I heavily doubt it. She wants to wear clothes which she feels good in. In the end, this is an issue of parenting, maybe more so an issue of “fathering.” Her dad needs to step up and draw the line with his daughter, and perhaps tackle the sticky issue of sex with his daughter. Whether she can assimilate her father’s insight or not, her dad needs to lay down the law.
One more thing I’m concerned about, more than what Zoe is wearing, and more than Zoe wishing to oppose her school’s administration, is the responses to this article which have supposedly come from Zoe’s classmates. Your comments are hateful and hurtful, and you have shown yourselves to be unfit as friends, whether Zoe’s or anyone elses. One day Zoe’s clothing choices and views on school rules will change. One day Zoe will grow up and no one will care about this ordeal. Your hateful attitudes towards a girl who is probably eleven now, on the other hand, will mark you for life. Soften your hearts now, or reap a life full of empty relationships and loneliness.
I dont have a life either so here I am posting a comment even though I have nothng what so ever to add to whats already been said.

I think that if the school says no mini skirts no mini skirts it,s not hurting you if your not wearing a mini skirt to school but if they made all the girls wear skirts that showed of your buttt and a tube top then you protest and I think the parents should stop her from doing this I think that her parents are sick for not thinking of there daughter all this fame is going to lead to rape and also to all you old men that drive in cirlcles around the parking lot you make me sick and you belong in jail.but I also think shes only doing this is because shes seen it on tv so to zoes mom wach what your kid waches.
i don’t think this is so much should pre-teens be allowed to wear mini-skirts. it sounds more like, should a school be allowed to enforce it’s rules upon it’s students.
there are rules every where you go in life. and at age 10, one should be getting taught to obey and follow the rules laid down by the authorities. not to rebel and object because one thinks they know better.

these people who speak of how the child needs to be able to make their own choices, well i wonder if they would feel the same if the child was put in charge of the house budget.
the aspect isn’t if you find a pre-teen in a mini-shirt appealing or not. it is does the school feel that such apparel should be allowed to be worn at school. if the school says no. then really the parents should be teaching the child to respect the authority of the school.
i am sure the school is acting in what they beleive is best for the child. and placing a rule stating that all dresses must go past the knees isn’t really asking too much.
there are always going to be rules and laws around us. some are good some are bad. some should be protested and some should be supported. but at age 10 i really don’t think that the child really knows what is good for her and what is bad for her. the idea that child have rights and should be allowed to make their own decisions. is a idea coming from a parent that doesn’t want to take the responcibility of parenthood.
No ten-year-old girl or boy has the mental capactiy, knowledge or the plain common sense to make their own decisions in life. I was ten-years-old only seven years ago and so I know how she feels. If we gave ten-year-olds the freedom to choose, they wouldn’t go to school, they would eat ice cream all day and life expectancy would drop to 22. Think about it people. I am unfortunatly zoe’s classmate, and she has basicly 1 friend now, and get this… I heard that she made out with some guy in a bathroom at a party. Yeah, an 11 year old makeing out with another 11 year old. She’s been watching wayyy too many soap operas and reading too many teen magazines. Almost all of the rumors at our school are about Zoe and she is the biggest brat I’ve ever met. My best friend is short for being in sixth grade,and Zoe came up to her when my friend moved here. Zoe said (disgustedly) are you a fifth grader. When she said no, Zoe said oh, you’re REALLY short what’s wrong with you. Then Zoe left. And don’t even get me started about the cloths she wears now. Yesterday she wore the tenniest shorts (I could see her underwear) and the thinnest shirt so that you could see a vivid outline of her bra. Talk about inappropriate. She always wears wayy to much makeup too. If you actually knew Zoe, you’d hate her even more than me.
You no we get so worked up over what the children wear and at the end of the day all we taught them was to wait until you are older to dress like a hore. I think if she wants to wear a mini skirt and she has a pair of legging or shorts under it, that should be fine as long as she dont have on a pair of high heels. Its always a method to the maddness. I show my daughter what looks good together and what is inappropriate for her and she understands. We work together as a team on this concern, and she is well aware of the fact that my word is the final word, and we move forward. The mother should look for clothes with her daughter and show her the right way to wear a mini for her age group. There are ways…..
I wouldn’t let my daughter wear one but I must admit that I wouldn’t mind seeing her in one. I would like it even better if she were wearing skimpy panties and being careless about crossing her legs! Sorry but pretty does not begin at 18.
