Zoe Hinkle thinks her miniskirt is fashionable. Her school’s principal says otherwise.
The fourth-grader plans to hold a rally after school Friday along with some classmates at Streams Elementary School in Upper St. Clair. The girls want to let school administrators know they don’t appreciate being told their dresses are too short.
“I think I needed to say something about it,” Hinkle, 10, said Wednesday. “Freedom of expression should be the style you choose.”
Hinkle claims Streams Principal Claire Miller told her last fall her skirt was too short, and now that warmer weather is returning, Hinkle’s friends are being told the same. The girls were told skirts must fall below the knees, Hinkle said.
Where are the girl’s parents? It’s not what the
girl wants, it’s what the parents will allow.
I guess it’s obvious that the parents must be
“WHITE TRASH” if they allow her daughter to dress
the way she wants.
If there’s no say so, then, don’t be crying after-
wards if the girl’s found naked and raped by the
river bank or dumped along the roadside.
Well, Lenard Cohen’s “Beautiful Losers” gives us a lyrical look at how dirty old man sexual perversion can be a path to religious transcendence. I have been looking to become a dirty old man ever since reading this excellent novel.
Now–looking at that picture, I have to admit I didn’t even see the short skirt–just a very pleasant young girl taking those first steps of thinking for herself, playing with group dynamics, seperating herself from her parents by initially totally caving in to what they want.
#93–vnoifvet, it never ocurred to me that this could be justification for violating the law or the girls privacy. Now, women/girls wearing provocative cloths and they wind up raped and dead==what percentage of the fault in such cases lies with the girl? With the parents? Who else would you blame?

Dear jojo it was not nice for her to call your friend short (you called her short to) but maybe she was angry at everyone for saying mean things about her she only has one friend and she had to let her anger out on something and maybe the reason she dresses like that because that was how she was taght to dress so maybe you can just cut her some slack you don,t know what she feeling or what shes going throught so maybe you could be her friend and maybe just maybe she will change .

okay….so in my school the skirts & shorts can only be like 4 inches away from the knee but we all wear shorter stuff & no one notices–but not like slutty stuff. this girls like 10. really i don’t think her mini skirt is such a big deal. seriously they’re making this a huge deal and its really not. the school should just change their policy to something a little shorter than “knee length” and get over it. this girl is trying to make a fashion statement, but she’s only like 10 or so. its a little weird.

Skirts to me are funny. I teach grade 2/3. In my school we do not have a dress code, instead I talk about students feeling comfortable. If they ever feel they need to cover up, then that is their virtue of modesty kicking in.
At the 2/3 level it does not matter how short their shorts are… As long as they are short. Some of the girls do where short skirts. It does make me feel a little uncomfortable, but when they are sitting on the carpet it becomes clear that they are wearing shorts underneath or it is a skort. Then that is fine. But it is the feeling before I know if it is a skort or a skirt that makes me wonder. When they are standing and doing normal things you can not tell.
If it turns out to be a skirt and I see their undies when they are sitting it does not really bother me.
What bothers me the most is when their modesty kicks in. If when they are sitting on the carpet and they cover up when I look in their direction I get concerned. Some girls will cover up even if they are wearing a skirt with shorts underneath. Sometimes they will cover up if they are wearing short shorts. If at all they feel they need to cover up when I look at them, I will speak to them.
I will say that they should never be uncomfortable about me look at them and it is a concern when kids are uncomfortable when I look at them. I talk about their modesty kicking in, and then speak to them about how they can solve the problem. Usually changing clothes or putting shorts on underneath.
Geeze, this is just a skirt. What’s wrong with america and all these stupid rules!? It looks like some folks have not seen pretty slender woman’s legs for century (which is probably true in most of Midwestern parts of US), so they’re ready to jump on a modest looking 10yo girl who just want to make a “fashion statement”. Oh man… I have a theory about the breast cult in US. Breast is worshiped here more than anywhere in the world because nothing else left in women to be crazy about. All these fat cows just killed the cult of sexual body in men’s heads. Breasts, breasts… The rest of the world is still walking high heels, short skirts, tight pants and don’t think it’s something outrageous.

isn’t this what girls do? i mean not only little girls but grown women. in my school us girls wear very short pants to p.e. while we are required to wear skirts to our knees elsewhere; it all seems pretty hypocritical to me.
