Forbes – 03.22.06:

The new version of Microsoft Windows, called Vista, has slipped again. It was originally going to ship in 2003. Then 2005. Then 2006. Now in early 2007. I’m not surprised, having seen a demo of Microsoft’s new programs at an “event” for tech buyers in New York last week.

500 tech buyers sat there in the dark, their eyes glazing over from the sheer mind-numbing pointlessness of most of this stuff. The audience laughed out loud when the Microsoft guy showed off a kludgey system that lets you fetch Outlook e-mail messages using voice commands from a cell phone.

Worst of all, I can’t believe Microsoft actually held this big nonevent “event” only a few days before announcing another screw-up in Vista. If Ballmer knew he was about to announce a delay and still had this event, he’s crazy. If he didn’t know Vista was about to slip again, then Microsoft is in worse shape than anyone realizes.

And Smart House is reporting that 60% Of Windows Vista’s code has to be rewritten before it’s released to the public.

Up to 60% of the code in the new consumer version of Microsoft new Vista operating system is set to be rewritten as the Company “scrambles” to fix internal problems a Microsoft insider has confirmed to SHN.

Microsoft has also admitted that it has major problems in it’s Windows division and has has immediatly initiated a total restructure of the division, a move that comes after a costly delay in rolling out its Vista program.

John has his own ideas as to why Vista is being delayed.

Update: In a carefully worded statement, Microsoft slammed Smart House’s article as “speculation,” but didn’t actually deny the allegation that 60% of the code needs to be re-written. Does that mean it’s true?!

I’ve been rippin’ on Microsoft since before it was cool to be rippin’ on Microsoft. Wait, it has always been cool to rip on Microsoft. Anyway, I don’t need no Johnny-come- lately getting in on my Windows bashin’ action.

This is better than Balmer running around on stage sweating and screaming like a crazed monkey. Hee, hee, hee!

  3. gquaglia says:

Yeah maybe Balmer should worry about his own bread and butter products (Windows & Office) and not worry about all this other nonsense products (oragomi) and trying to take on Google.

So should I replace my Windows ME machine, or wait for Vista?

John has his own ideas as to why Vista is being delayed.

    snippet:

Hae-Yu concludes that the multi-media components of the consumer edition of Vista could have easily been hung up on something simple like legal bickering over licenses for the myriad of technologies to be incorporated.

Interesting that only the consumer version is delayed…

Sony announces the Playstation 3 will be delayed until November – and will only have the interim version of the AACS (Advanced Access Content System) for Blu-ray discs.

Blu-ray & HD DVD announce delays – almost certainly because both formats use AACS… [HD DVD was supposed to be so easy to manufacture, because it only required minor mods to existing equipment for DVD stamping – so why else would that format have a delay?]

Now, the consumer version of Vista is delayed. Is that because the AACS it would need for Home Theatre versions is not ready?

    T.C. Moore,

replace the Windows not the Machine.

    Windows ME (Microsoft Experiment).

Maybe they’re (MS) thinking of changing the name again? Perhaps to Microsoft SA (Screwed Again).

Could VISTA be an all times failure for Microsoft?

There are some interesting gossips from the valley these days, that some promising start-ups are working w/ a long-term vision of developing Web 2.0 kind of OS components… So building very simple stuff for people who don’t need all the hassle of Windows… OS mashups? Could they became real someday?

I thought Win98 was the complete OS, then 2000 was even better, now XP is by far the best I’ve seen coming from MS. This Vista thing seems to be more of a bust then that Godzilla movie that tanked a few years back.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer monopolist.
O well M$ I guess you arn’t the greatest company on Earth and everything that comes out of Bill Gates ass is the do all, be all product. Vista is the biggest embassement to M$ and if Apple plays it right, could make some major gains in the OS market.
Its not a hard choice; M$ no update in 4 years, full version of OS cost $300 and can only be used on 1 computer, enforced by product activation. Mac OS consistant updates, OS cost $150 and for $200 you can install it on 5 computers, no product activation.
    Asta la vista baby!

  12. Emil says:

Actually, does anybody really care? Im doing totally fine with XP today, and I think I’ll do so even a long time after Vista is launched. It’s not really a 98 to XP jump we are waiting for here.

  13. Mozart says:

vista? just copy and paste from mac os x and you’ll get “vistaaah”.

    Microsoft: No Vista Code Changes

Microsoft slammed an article by Australian technology publication Smart House on Friday, calling it “speculation.” The retort came as a result of a story that cited sources within the company saying as much as 60 percent of Vista code needs to be rewritten.

  16. BOB G says:

gquaglia if microsoft never comes out with another OS it will still own 90% of the market. Apple will never make gains untill it can run all windows software. That is a fact that will not change no matter how pretty the gui is or stable it is. outside of colledge towns or calafornia NO ONE USES IT. you can not get it serviced you can not get help if you have a problem. Both our local cabel companys do not suport it. The people I have run into who have bought apples in the past all went windows on there next machines for these very reasons. remember everybody doesnot live in calafornia

  17. Re: #17

That’s why I’m grinning at the progress made so far by Wine and ReactOS. They’ll only get better as time passes and now that Macs are using Intel processors, Wine on OSX is only a matter of time. (It would be here now, but OSX lacks or provides broken implementations of a lot of things that Wine uses)

  18. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Apple will never make gains untill it can run all windows software.

I would have to agree with that. As much as I dislike Windows, and as much as I like OS X and Linux, I just cannot be without a Windows machine in today’s world. Linux is just too much of a pita for most people, most key MS products do not run, and the Windows emulator for OS X is a pathetic joke.

Either they’re going to have to come up with some killer apps for the alternate OSs, or MS could have won the OS “wars” with Windows 95.

  19. Alex says:

You are forgetting about the intel Macs. You can now dual boot a Mac with Windows. Macs are running windows faster than PCs with the same chips. I am sure that within this year you will be able to run Windows apps in a virtualized environment within Mac OS (like Virtual PC) except this time it will be running at full speed.

If you have a machine that can run Mac OS X and Windows at the same time at full speed, then you have the best of both worlds. You have your cake and you can eat it too. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the computer market once this is possible. More people would choose Macs because they no longer have to give up on those Windows apps that they cant live without (solitaire?). Apple could actually start gaining market share because of this. These Vista delays can only help Apple. Mac OS X has many of the things that Vista is promising already and Leopard will be here before Vista with even more techical advances for Microsoft to catch up to.

  20. Dan McKinley says:

Look, if you actually believe that tens of millions of lines of code are planned for a rewrite, then I have a bridge I would like to sell you. If you think this is even a remote possibility, then you know nothing about the business of writing software. This is right up there with “The Electric Universe” as one of the stupidest ideas ever to appear on this site.

  21. My name is Wendy Angus and i would like to show you my personal experience with Xanax.

I am 45 years old. Have been on Xanax for 2 years now. In working with a wonderful doctor and therapist, I have learned Meniere’s Disease is an anxiety=provoked condition, and is the worst thing I have ever suffered in my life. To manage this, I take a low dose of Wellbutrin everyday and have a 1mg Rx for Xanax, which I am supposed to take 3x-a-day, but to be honest, I usually only take about 3-1mg a week, so only taking it when I honestly feel “too anxious”. I also take Meclizine for the Meniere’s attacks and those are only as needed as well. I feel the Xanax is better to have around than not, for my personal conditions. It took me a long time to balance out my meds, and taking too much xanax feels as horrible as the withdrawl can be, as I’ve experienced both. Now, after much time in getting to know what my body needs and how I am feeling (like with anxiety), and removing the ‘stigma’ of having to take a drug to manage my conditions is now over, taking just a few pills a week seems to work beautifully.

I have experienced some of these side effects –
It makes me very thirsty (dry mouth) but seems to work well in combination with other drugs for my conditions with no ill effects.

I hope this information will be useful to others,
    Wendy Angus
