Los Angeles Times – January 20, 2006:

Chinese investors couldn’t buy a U.S. oil company or the maker of Maytag appliances, but now a Hong Kong group will be able to claim a real American icon: Wham-O Inc., the maker of Frisbee, Hula-Hoop, Silly String and Slip ‘N Slide toys.

Update: Gun manufacturer Winchester calls it quits too. You know something’s wrong when America cannot even support its own gun industry.

It would be like Chevrolet going out of business or Chevrolet being made in Japan or China,” firearms historian Ned Schwing says. “Winchester is an American legend, whether you’re a gun person or not.

    So what? Global economy.

Amazon, EBay owns a lot of major chinese internet companies…

Maybe the items aren’t selling because kids are sitting in front a gaming console with their free time.

  3. Gregory says:

To be fair: Wham-O was until very recently owned by Matel, so it’s not like its a big shock – the investors that bought it in 97 must have realised it wasn’t worth the trouble.

A shame, but it’s really not news.

I would love to see the day when that was the case.

SignofZeta- so you would rather trust our defense with foreign made
guns? Don’t give me this there shouldn’t be any guns at all load of
bull, because that’s just a fantasy that will never happen – in our
lifetimes anyway. Open your eyes and see the forest, not just the trees.

“that will never happen – in our lifetimes anyway”

Never say “never.” Before 9/11, who’d have thought such an attack was possible? Further, who’d have thought we’d be so willing to give up our personal freedoms and privacy like we have since then (I never was, but apparently I’m in the minority – just like I’m one of the few who never cared for DUHbya from the get-go)? ‘Tis a scary world out there and getting ever more so by the minute…
