United Press International – Jan. 18 2006: — The American education system at work.

A 16-year-old boy who doodled an alleged gang symbol in his notebook has been expelled from high school in McHenry, Ill.

The Chicago Tribune reported board officials said a doodle of a crown, a cross and a spider web with the initials “D.L.K.” in the middle was a symbol of a street gang. The youth’s full name is Derek Leon Kelly.

Yet another example of incredible stupidity.

  2. dubya says:

you mean comments that provide no insight what so ever?

  3. David Clark says:

    Zero tolerance for… rational logic?

  4. James Hill says:

I’m sure the kid did something to deserve it.

(See, with logic like that, I too can be a politician.)

  5. RTaylor says:

It’s easy to cry liberty. not so easy teaching in an inner city school. You try to be flexible with policy and you’ll get blasted out the water every time. These people are in the educational trenches, and can’t discuss particulars with the press like parents or community leaders can. These stories are often biased toward the offender because schools can’t discuss closed door disciplinary procedures. Knees can jerk in several different directions.

  6. JoAnn says:

I’d wait a few days to pass judgement. Just like the student who was allegedly visited by the Secret Service after he checked out Mao’s Little Red Book, there’s likely more (or less) to this story than what’s been reported.

    Don’t believe everything you read.
    Don’t believe ANYTHING you read.

  7. Peter Hollett says:

He couldn’t have accidentally drawn DLK in a crown, spider web and a cross.

  8. Sounds The Alarm says:

Simple another example of the death of common sense.

  9. Tom says:

I saw this yesterday on the Trib web site. I thought that this should be included before you spout your mouths…

From the Trib web site — Kelly has attended the school for three years but is still a freshman. Noting that her son has been written up 54 times for disturbing or cutting classes, his mother said, “Obviously, he is a disciplinary problem.”

And McHenry is hardly iner city.

  10. Kent Goldings says:

Because everyone knows, throwing a child out of school is the best way to keep them out of gangs.

  11. gquaglia says:

And these are supposely well educated people making these decisions.

  12. Improbus says:

Sounds like the youngster could use a government approved gang. Ship his hiney off to the Army. If the Army can’t fix his discipline problem he will end up in prison or dead, no doubt.

  13. David Clark says:

I don’t suppose being in a gang is illegal, after all? What’s a gang but a club without membership cards.

    Perhaps I’m showing my ignorance.

  14. Dan says:

Kent: exactly. Throwing the kid out of school, making it clear the system has rejected him and doesn’t want him, is going to do more to drive him to a gang than keep him away.

The schools have become infected by PC mentality and more importantly, by (over-)imaginative lawyers.

  15. Mister Mustard says:

    >>It’s easy to cry liberty. not so easy teaching in an inner city school.

    McHenry IL is “inner city”???

  16. Smith says:

Too much of what is going on in schools is the result of over-reaction to the Columbine tragedy. Zero tolerance is cover-your-ass, it-ain’t-my-decision stupidity.

Government cannot guarantee everyone’s safety, but it can destroy everyone’s liberty by trying to make them safe.
