My prediction: the lowest rated Superbowl ever! XL means “Extra Light.”
FOXSports.com – Weekend review: Steelers get ‘strange’ win — This was the topper. The highly favored Colts proved once again that no matter what good fortune befalls them, they will find a way to choke and lose big football games. It’s the perfect combination of ingredients. But all the favored teams except Seattle lost in the NFL playoffs leaving a bunch of uninteresting uncharismatic teams to fight for a Superbowl Ring. Nobody will care.
Ah, parity. How sweet.
Pittsburgh (13-5-0) 21
Indianapolis (14-3-0) 18
Carolina (13-5-0) 29
Chicago (11-6-0) 21
Washington (11-7-0) 10
Seattle (14-3-0) 20
New England (11-7-0) 13
Denver (14-3-0) 27
Colts lost, I’m happy, let’s go home.
I guess since I am from Pittsburgh I should say “ya go Steelers” but I am not much into Football, I am a hockey person.
This Superbowl will have great ratings if the Steelers make, the fans are in every city in the NFL
MY COLTS!!!
oh, the humanity,
will the sun ever rise again?
Parity? If two 8-8 teams were going to meet in the Superbowl I would see your point, but the last time I checked all of the remaining teams had at least 13 wins. I’m thrilled that this year we won’t have to watch another New England vs. who cares Superbore.
I don’t know why Bettis got so down on himself ’cause of that 4th quarter fumble. Yeah, he is paid to hold on to the ball but it was slammed away by a freak’n helmet. I don’t think it would have been any easier to hold onto if it were blasted away by a darned shotgun.
On the other side of the coin however, I’m having a really difficult time understanding why the Colts would have called for a punt just to tie the game when they’re paying Manning the big bucks to come through with the big play when the pressure is on.
And that’s the facts from a “Monday Morning Quarterback”! 🙂
Isn’t this what makes football so exciting, that one team (the colts) are so awesome and then they just happen to loose, and get not shot, not matter how good they did the rest of the season? Same for the patriots. Obviously they aren’t going to the superbowl for a reason, cause they couldn’t step up when it counted. I See Broncos and Steelers in the superbowl. Both great teams and a great game will be played. Later
Damn you Bears!! Why?! I put up with the Super Bowl Shuffle and I still loved you… and for this?!
Dvorak- you missed an opportunity to slam the former boss.
Paul Allen gave a rah-rah speech to the ‘Chickens of the Sea’ after the game. It seemed odd to me. During his visit to the TechTV studios he barely uttered a word. Why is the co-founder of Microsoft more comfortable in a locker room than in a room full of geeks?
Regardless, I hope the Seahawks clean house next weekend on Carolina, the Seattleites who supported Allen’s stadium bond and now pay a special tax for Qwest Stadium deserve a few wins.
Mick, I believe time was the reason and when you have a kicker like Vanderjagt who never misses, until yesterday, you go with the closest sure thing and Manning isn’t it. The Colts played the odds and lost. If Coach Dungy would have gone for it with Manning instead and they didn’t get a touchdown Dungy might be out of a job or be in danger for his life. Both of the players and fans who know Vanderjagt’s talent (as a kicker) thought the game was going into overtime.
REF RECAP
I am upset about the officials this weekend. Polamalu of Pittsburgh did intercept that pass and the outcome of the game probably wouldn’t have been as close.
In the New England – Denver game the defense was called for a facemask during a catch and it also looked like the defense did it also and before the offense. The amazing thing is during the replay you see the ref pulling the flag while the receiver was stiff arming the cornerback (and facemasking) before the defenders arm gets near his body. You could see this at one angle (opposite of the ref) and it was shown once.
Then there is the Bears fumble and Carolina scoring being called back. I don’t believe the replay was conclusive but I wanted Carolina to win so there may be bias in my opinion. When Grossman threw an intentional grounding pass you clearly see 3 refs running toward each other like “who’s going to throw the flag”. If that isn’t intentional grounding then you should make the waterboy eligible.
I can’t forget near the end of the Bears game when it was clearly a delay of game and the refs let the Bears go ahead. This was clearly showing incompetence (or favor). Carolina intercepted that pass.
There were other calls in these games this weekend that were not impressive to say the least.
John, of the last 6 Superbowls 4 of them have been close. Of those 4 three were decided by 3 points and the other was 7 which was the Rams-Titans game which was a yard short of overtime. Before that most all of them were blowouts which weren’t interesting anymore before the first half ended.
Do you know how much of a fan base the Steelers have? Not an interesting team? Not a charismatic team? Big Ben! The Bus’s last stop is in Detroit – his hometown! Steelers pack so many away games that it’s crazy!
What? Look at Denver. I just don’t see how having an overall record of 14-3 and an entire season undefeated at home (9 times so far) makes a team worthy of a miserable rating.
I totally agree with above comment about NOT having the same Patriots VS whoever matchup again.
Do I need to explain charisma? Yes, the Steelers DO have some personality, but they also have that creepy coach who is always yelling and screaming. They’ll lose to Seattle who will lose to either Denver or Carolina — both boring teams. A Seattle Denver Superbowl would be the most ironic since both were once in the same AFC division for decades. So much for the NFC stepping up.
As for the person asking why Bettis didn’t take a knee. It was cosmic. The forces of football had to convince us exactly HOW BAD the Colts really are when it comes to playing clutch football. Let’s give them another shot with more than enough time. A shame. I hate to say it but it has something to do with Dungy. I mean he left Tampa and the exact same team wins a Superbowl without him under Gruden who has mismanged the team ever since. My advice? Make Dungy a high-paid GM. Take him out of coaching.
You’re a bitter homer “No Spam” Dvorak. The Denver Bronco’s are an exciting team. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team of character and grit. The Seattle Seahawks have been quietly winning and fighting way out there in the Northwest all season and the Carolina Panthers have found it within themselves to battle on and through to the NFC Championship Game. If you want only the teams you want to win I suggest you try the World Wrestling Federation for scripted stories or better yet, make up your own. In the NFL after all the talking is done and the imaginary champions are crowned they actually do go out and play the games anyways. Sorry it didn’t turn out the way you wanted this year and sorry ‘your’ team didn’t make it. Now get over it.
As far as ref screw ups go lets not forget that BS pass interferance call on new england, that put denver at the 1 yard line. There was no grounds for that call at all.
John, I think you are talking about things you don’t know enough about.
“Yes, the Steelers DO have some personality, but they also have that creepy coach who is always yelling and screaming. They’ll lose to Seattle who will lose to either Denver or Carolina — both boring teams.”
The Steelers are playing Denver next week, not Seattle.
And yes, I guess you do need to explain charisma. How does Indy have it and the Steelers don’t. Indy was the best team in the regular season but performance does not equal charisma. Sure, they have all american white boy Peyton leading them, but he certainly is not charismatic. Throw in the death of Tony’s son and you have a good story, but not charisma.
Colts and Bears lost (grumble).
At least I can root for Denver (probably the kiss of death).
John, sick with tech. How can you say “boring?” The underdog Steelers winning 3 on the road to get to the Super Bowl, and Seatlle–a team that’s never been to a Super Bowl–will make for a great game, even for those like me who aren’t into the game too much.
whats up with the interception that john lynch “had” at the end of the broncos – pats game, it basically hit the ground. and there was no challenge by the booth, he definetly did not have control of the ball, i see some favoritism in the league since the divisional playoffs.
