Arguably the greatest player ever.

Work harder than anyone else, become the best, then watch your personal belongings being auctioned off on eBay. Somehow that’s not how they preached it to you as a kid. Only in America.

ChessBase: Bobby Fischer’s life for sale – on eBay

When he dropped out of public view in the seventies, World Champion Bobby Fischer placed all of his most valuable belongings into a Pasadena storage unit. Some years ago the contents were sold off by the landlord, apparently in response to nonpayment of rent. Now the Fischer memorabilia have appeared on eBay.

To provide background on Fischer is beyond the scope of this post. But maybe later…. Suffice it to say, this is fascinating stuff, including the comments section on the ChessBase site. Plus it will give Fischer haters another excuse to talk about Fischer.

If this isn’t a hoax, bidding should be quite lively by the end of the auction. There’s already one bid as I write this. But I expect most of the action will come in the final seconds.

This is something, where if I had the money I would buy it. However it is slightly misleading, is his actual board and pieces on sale, or just the books?

  2. Jon says:

    Current bid: 15000

  3. Don says:

Bobby Fischer is a quirky guy, but that’s nothing new in Grandmaster Chess. He may have been the best ever, certainly the best US produced, and it’s sad how he’s been abused due to his unpopular stances.

  4. Josh says:

By unpopular you mean saying every professional chess match since his retirement was rigged by a global jewish conspiracy, applauding 9/11 and denying the Holocaust took place?

Um, yeah, real victim of public opinion.

  5. DanGarion says:

Poor poor Bobby… Oh wait I feel no sympathy for Bobby.
