A group of students have impressed judges but upset purists with their design, which echoes Concorde

A TEAM of young scientists has created what they believe to be the perfect paper plane.

It can fly more than 100ft (30m) and remain aloft for about 20 seconds. Most importantly, it is easy to make. The plane, named Avenger, has been judged by academics to contain the ideal balance between complex aerodynamic principles and simplicity of design. Its looks may also have helped: the delta wing is reminiscent of Concorde.

Amazing! They’ve reinvented the plane my friends and I used to fly in elementary school 25 years ago.

The only difference is that we didn’t cut out the control surfaces (we offset them by rubbing the paper with a fingernail), nor did we use tape to secure the folds (we licked it: the cheap paper we used got gummy when licked).

¿Does anybody remember an amazing book with all kinds of paper airplane designs from about 1978? It was hardcover, and came with balsa wood cutout sheet to make a simple rubber-band-propeller, china-paper-covered biplane.

    Nice to remember those times.

I remember making this paper plane back in the 80’s. It’s called the Kline-Fogleman wing and its patented.

Like the others, I made virtualy this exact same plane when in grade school in the early 80s.
