Last week I was in Paris and spotted this interesting tank positioned under the Air France place from DeGaulle to SFO. Perhaps it was because of the rioters. Or just security. Whatever the case I was most amused by the name given the tank; “Calvados.” This is a strong Apple brandy and a specialty of France. I think it’s cool to name tanks after booze!

The Calvados appears to be an armored troup carrier not a tank.

When I first flew to Germany in 1986 they had just had a series of terrorist bombings from the Red Army Faction in Frankfurt. I came off the plane and was greeted by the German Army in full battle gear, tanks similar to this, and bomb-sniffing dogs checking all the luggage coming off the plane.

Even with the “heightened security” here in the US, we still aren’t as bad as they are in Europe.

I don’t think this is anything new. I flew to Bulgaria through Paris in 2003 and the CVG->CDG leg (or more likely the return leg) was guarded by armed soldiers. I noticed only the US flagged carriers were guarded. When I returned, through Bucharest they had special departure area for any US flight.

Those are armored transports, not tanks. Probably pretty good for positioning troops next to hijacked planes without getting shot, although I suspect they may be put to better use in the suburbs of paris these days…

  5. Intensecure says:

Why did you capitalize “Apple” in your blog entry? It isn’t iCalvados yet, you know!

  6. John Lettice says:

Well, I’m IN Calvados right now, and I haven’t seen any of these things around. But considering local driving standards, maybe this class of vehicle could make a contribution to the French government’s campaign to reduce road deaths…

  7. meetsy says:

oooh, I want this as my next car!
Hey, the thing would be hard to BURN…maybe this is a good idea for the riot areas of France?

  8. tim says:

Not a tank, looks an armored personnel carrier or an armored fighting vehicle.
