US conglomerate General Electric Co. said Tuesday it had won a big contract to supply 300 train locomotives to China to help in the booming country’s bid to modernise its vast rail network.

GE said it had signed the contract worth more than 450 million dollars with the Chinese Railways Ministry to supply the 6,000-horsepower locomotives in cooperation with the Qishuyan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works.

The deal “will open new lines of revenue, give us a larger installed base outside of North America and enable GE to better compete to replace China’s current fleet of 6,500 mainline locomotives over the next 15 years”, he said.

Delivery of the locomotives is planned to start in 2007 and end in 2009.

Gonna be a lot of happy faces around the holiday table in Erie.

  1. Jon says:

Good thing for both GE and China. Train tarveling is still the prevelant means of long distance transportation in China and all the old trains surely can use some upgrades…

  2. David says:

And how long before they reverse engineer them and start making cheap knock-offs to sell against GE locomotives.

  3. Alexander Augustyniak says:

Here’s hoping for that holiday cheer in dreary Erie. (My father is a sys analyst at GE Rail here.)

  4. William Walstrom says:

Nice we still build something. I’d given up all hope after I found out that the new Marine One is going to be an import.

  5. Obviousman says:

Well, add this to Sith Lord VP Cheney’s plans to help China build nuclear reactors with US help…anyway.

China will use trains 1-299, then rip apart train #300 & reverse engineer it, then never buy another GE train again, then down the road undercut GE’s trains.

Wait until Chery starts selling Chinese cars to debt-crushed, poor & middle class Americans. They are planning on entering the US market in 2006, the same time GM & Ford’ll be rolling in debt & unable to get cheap refi from the markets because of their junk status ratings. Will the Chinese enter at the precise worst time & be a death knell for US manufacturers? Will the US government have to bail out the airlines & car makers for the, what, 900th time since 1980???

The China are winning a war without a battle, & using the USA’s money to do it & beefing up their military. Russia & China have merged military operations & now have more nukes that the USA.

Anyone think they’re preparing for a fight???

  6. James Hill says:

Wow. A whole new round of left wing kooks are finding this board. Joy.

  7. RTaylor says:

“Nice we still build something. I’d given up all hope after I found out that the new Marine One is going to be an import.”

I was really hoping they would use the Osprey. 🙂

  8. Patrick says:

Well, someone’s going to sell them 450 million worth of train, it might as well be us.

  9. Awake says:

Yay! America actually exported something… are we actually building them in the USA, or GE just got the contract to build them in China????
