Here’s the new Slingbox, the cool product that lets you feed video on to the net from your TV.

This may be one of the slickest packaging jobs I’ve seen for a while. I have yet to find out from the company who designed it.

  1. Jim Scarborough says:

    Here’s the manufacturer’s site.

  2. Michael G says:

Let me know what you think of this Product. I am not an Apple guy, so packaging means nothing to me.

Does the damn thing Work, is what I am worried about

  3. raindog says:

That’s pretty. It might even be useful someday if someone figures out how to watch the video remotely on a Mac or Linux box instead of “SlingPlayer” (because the world needs yet another proprietary video player) under WinXP.

  4. skeptik says:

The packaging better be good becasue the product doesn’t seem very useful.
What is this bogus device…why would anyone need this? Do you need to stream video inside your house to PC? Why? Do you want to stream your content over the internet? There is http://www.orb.com that seems like it would be a better solution(though i haven’t tried it) ..of course you must have the content on your pc first (though it includes tv tuner cards supposedly)

  5. Hal Jordan says:

I hope there’s a hack that would allow the slingbox stream to be viewed by many computers on the net. Where’s a DVDJon when you need one.

  6. Awake says:

I looked and looked at the package the other day at Best Buy in San Carlos. All looks and little substance. I never did figure out what that thing is supposed to do by reading the package stuff. I was actually somewhat turned-off by the package, probably because in my experience fancy packaging almost always leads to a disappointment with the contents.

Frankly, the way that things are packaged is of little significance in the end, it is the contents that matters… but maybe that remark belongs in the “Democracy Now” (using whiny voice: “I don’t like the way she speaks!”) thread!

  7. Hawkeye says:

    More crap for the landfill.

  8. mike derosa says:

IF, the video is actually watchable, I don’t understand all the scepticism here. Just the abiliity to control any of your dvr/hd-cable boxes remotely (with all the commands of these complicated remotes!) is pretty cool tech.
being able to watch the actual programs/recordings is downright amazing, no?
Again, there is the aforementiond big IF.

  9. Another layer of competition.
Once again another way to pick and choose our devices and services.
‘m sure a Sling box hosting service will pop up soon and the lawsuites will fly once again.
So the next tv show you watch will it be from a cable, dish, Wi-Fi, P2P, or Internet host or directly from NBC?
Will the major brodcasters Such as ABC and HBO deliver TV directly to you with out the need cable?
    Think about it!

  10. raddad says:

Well, we bought one so my wife could watch cable TV on her laptop while getting ready for work in the mornings. The packaging looks cool, but we had to tear the box in order to get it out.

We also bought a powerline bridge so her laptop could control the HD-DVR in the family room. Well, the powerline bridge worked; I was able to connect to the wireless router with my laptop, but the Slingbox could never establish an IP address. Thinking there was some incompatibility between the Slingbox and the bridge, I connected it directly to the router using a long CAT-5 cable. Still no luck.

I finally gave up, boxed it all back up as best as I could and returned it to Best Buy. That’s not to say that others would have a poor experience, but it didn’t work for us.

  11. BB says:

I bought one a few weeks — works very well. Kids got to watch their Tivoed shows all the way from a hotel in Hawaii.

I found that the setup was straightforward, and it so far it has been 100% stable. You do need to configure your router to do port forwarding — Maybe that was raddad’s problem?

I agree that the package, while cool looking, is hard to open.

  12. raddad says:

No, I went through the few troubleshooting steps listed including checking for port forwarding. There was no diagnostics capability available, just no connection. Glad it worked for you, BB.
