Bill would make expiration dates for gift cards illegal
Nearly two-thirds of Wisconsin legislators back a bill that would make it illegal to sell gift cards or gift certificates with fees or expiration dates.“For the first time, more people are buying gift cards than apparel,” Krusick said. “It’s very simple: A gift card that says $50 on the front should be worth $50.”
Krusick said that under a change in state law a few years ago, Wisconsin merchants no longer have to turn over to the state the unused value on gift cards.
“Now, merchants can just keep that money,” she said. “That’s not right; it’s the shopper’s money.”

New York did this several months ago. I heard Chuck Schumer talking about it earlier this week.
Hope the rest of the States get with it soon!
Maybe someday politicians will take the same attitude regarding taxes and their obscene spending sprees with “the people’s” money. I doubt it though… too many votes to be bought.
I didn’t know that Wisconsin had Canadian Tire stores – the pictured gift cards are from Canadian Tire. đ
It certainly is a good business move to put expiration dates on the cards – if allowed to continue, they would eventually only be good for a few days before the funds would be sent to the CEO’s bonus.
Nice picture!
Canadian Tire gift cards?
wow..
How about these online stores then, Amazon, for example…
Washington State, like New York State, outlawed expiration dates on gift cards several years ago.

âNow, merchants can just keep that money,â she said. âThatâs not right; itâs the shopperâs money.â
However, it was just fine when the money defaulted to the goverment, because all money really belongs to the goverment and to the politicians right? They are the only ones who REALLY (wink, wink) know how our money should be spent.
The public, we are a bunch of marooons who but giftcards and let the money on it go to the company instead of the goverment, have we no sense at all?
Finally! A government that is concerned about consumer issues.
Now if they would just do that with rebate checks!
Please. Please! Bring back the days when our elected officials actually cared about the consumer.
