“I wonder why he doesn’t phone home?”

Scotsman.com News – Sci-Tech – Phones will soon tell by way a user walks if it’s fine to talk — This is nothing more than a gimmick that will never work in the field. This sort of thing is tried over and over and simply doesn’t work. You have two drinks and then you suddenly can’t call to get someone to drive you home. Great idea. I recall a computer password protection scheme based on similar ideas. It didn’t work either.

MOBILE phones will soon be able to recognise their owners by the way they walk, say scientists who unveiled a security sensor which responds to a person’s movements.

The technology, developed by Finnish researchers, would disable equipment if it sensed the person using it was not the owner, helping to cut crime by preventing unauthorised use of portable devices such as laptops and mobile phones.

The inventors say the system could also be adapted for credit cards in the future so it could verify a user’s identity based on their physical movements before approval of payment transactions.

Here is where they could prove this works

What a wierd counter-intuitive solution to a real problem. And will it work in America where most of us don’t walk anywhere?

Personal voice recognition is the obvious solution.

  2. Mike Voice says:

How far do I have to walk before I can make a call?

Do I have to make a few laps around the room, if the phone has been connected to the charger over-night?

Will I have to stop my car, and run around it a few times, before making a call? Hey! I actually like that – as a way to keep people from talking while driving! 🙂

Would people who carry their phones in a purse or knapsack not be able to change bags – because the signature “sway” would change?

I agree with John – interesting science with a crappy suggested-use.

  3. Miguel Lopes says:

Well, it would be nice if the phone knew it was inside a moving car and didn’t allow the driver to make or receive a call…

    Just a thought…

  4. RonD says:

Personal voice recognition might work, if I am the only one to use the phone. What if I want to loan it to someone I know so they can make a call? Or loan it to someone in a car accident who needs to call someone?

An idea looking for a problem. Maybe this could work with firearms?
