“Uh oh, it’s the photographer again.. play dumb.”

Clever Whale Said To Teach Others His Tricks

Michael Noonan, a professor of animal behavior at Canisius College in Buffalo, made the discovery by accident while studying orca acoustics.

“One day I noticed one of the young whales appeared to have come up with a procedure for luring gulls down to the pool,” the professor said. “I found it interesting so I noted it in my log.”

First, the young whale spit regurgitated fish onto the surface of the water, then sank below the water and waited.

If a hungry gull landed on the water, the whale would surge up to the surface, sometimes catching a free meal of his own.

Noonan watched as the same whale set the same trap again and again.

Within a few months, the whale’s younger half brother adopted the practice. Eventually the behavior spread and now five Marineland whales supplement their diet with fresh fowl, the scientist said.

Now this! Already we’ve gotten studies recently of the Dolphins using tools, teaching one another, and rudimentary material culture.Soon they’ll be sending ambassadors to the land wearing mechanized legs made of coral and sunken boat engines.

Those mammals never cease to amaze me with their intelligence.

Maybe the whale can use a pretzel and swallow Bush.

  4. James Hill says:

You know a blog has been lost to the loony left when even a whale thread pulls a Bush crack.

Hopefully this level of thought doesn’t taint your columns in the way it has scared the once interesting conversation in these threads.

You’re right Sean, I feel the same way… sadly – for me – that sentiment doesn’t extend to ‘our own’ breed of mammal. When I think about it, one of the principle things I’ve learnt as I have progressed through my life is that ‘humans’ are far more ‘stupid’ than i had thought – new evidence has unfailingly presented itself to me of this fact and it just seems to get worse and worse (I can’t even exclude myself!). Anyway, sorry to sound so cynical…John L thanks for my first laugh of the day! 🙂

Maybe you’re better off having a “W” (whale) for president. At least all you need is a lot of gulls to make him happy. With that other “W” will never stop until he solves your economy by destroying muslimkind and rebuilding carbon copies of america in the middle east.

  7. Eideard says:

Looking at a Konservative whining because a portion of thoughtful Americans are so disgusted with the pervasive incompetence of the thug in the White House that they actually make mention of it — within the whole breadth of their intellectual life — reinforces the concept I’m thinking of adding as a slogan to my own blog:

Evolution has taught us that we are not only a perfectable species; but, perhaps, the first capable of self-perfection.

    Just not in my lifetime!
