San Francisco puts these cool-looking streetcars into service every summer. This overhead shot shows an old unit from Portugal.

Dallas is another city that does tthis. Some years ago I was in the Dallas car barn talking to one of the supervisors about these antiques and apparently it’s like a club and all these cities trade these cars freely year after year like car collectors. A nice club.

That’s a very old car, btw. Here in Lisbon we still have them, they’re yellow, and only recently have they started to be replaced with new, ‘euro-modern’ looking units, which are much faster, more confortable and with air conditioning. However, one of the things I actually preferred in the old electric cars was precisely that you didn’t have air-conditioning – in hot summer days you just got the windows all the way down, and it was almost like riding in a slow convertible… Looking at the streets and everything that was happening a bit everywhere. It was great. A few years ago (OK, 15 or 20 years ago) when I went to university in Lisbon there was much less traffic and pollution, and it could be *quite* nice to ride one of those! Especially in Summer! August is the right time, these days, almost everybody leaves the capital, so the center of Lisbon is all but deserted!
