Police found Felipe covered in filth. Officers said he was threatening to kill himself. After they took him into custody, they found the animals that were also living in the trash-, food-and feces-filled home. Many of the animals are so sick that veterinarians say they can’t be saved. Once some of the nearby residents heard the news, they went to the home to see if their lost pets were among those found.

Do you know how hard it is to keep the mentally disturbed hospitalized for more than 72 hours? They turn them out on the street with 24 hours worth of meds and an address to outpatient services. I agree some loss of basic liberties regularly occurred at state mental hospitals, but boarding them up wasn’t the answer. You can best judge a society by how it cares for it’s most needy citizens. I’ve suffered from chronic depression and anxiety-panic disorder for 25 years and I’m a survivor. If I had to rely on government services I doubt I would be alive to say that.
