PC Magazines former Editor-in-Chief nee columnist has turned blogger and jumped in out of the blue with this PC Mag column linked here. In the column he says he’ll look at more blogging tools if he’s encouraged. I say go to the PC Mag column and tell him to do just that. I can assure you that not that many of the normal readers will have much to say about it.

Bill is one of the best ever at getting to the bottom of things with pure independent thought and research. Even to get where he has gotten with the blog he avoided doing what a typical blogger would do: ask around. So we might end up with some information that doesn’t come from the bloggerdom group-think, As much as I avoid group-think I think Machrone is better.

That said, he’s doing some crackpot dating scheme for his posts that has to go.

Machrone’s blog

Yeah, I saw that with the date thing – there has got to be a way in MovableType to do what he wants to do. I wouldn’t know – I haven’t used MT in a while. I’ve been on Expression Engine for about 6 months now and really love it – it’s stable, has tons of options and has terrific support even though it most definitely is not free. I was using WordPress for a while, but decided I needed a bit more functionality, even though WP is a great product as well.

  2. T.C. Moore says:

He doesn’t go into much detail as to why he chose MoveableType over WordPress and PHP-Nuke.

Does anyone have any good links that compare different blogging software and services?

One I tried a year ago and liked is SnipSnap, which combines blogging and Wiki functions. Plus a bunch of other stuff. But does this mean it won’t be best of breed in any one of them? Also, it’s Java based and not many (cheap) hosting services will support that. http://www.snipsnap.org

  3. Jim Dermitt says:

I saw that Scoble did what Jim Lynch did.
He says, “I’m not having fun anymore. It’s time to take some time away from the blog.” http://scoble.weblogs.com/

I guess some people can’t deal with blogging over a long period of time. I hope Bill doesn’t go down this path. Blogging is about sharing!

Who can ever get tired of sharing? I guess you stop caring.
Bill has some good stuff posted, but his dates seem mixed up.

  4. Tom says:

I haven’t yet looked much at his blog, but any girl whom I might meet via a shared interest in Bill Machrone’s writings would, thanks to that shared interest, be instantly notched up many slots in my “Sincerely Interested” category — I, for one, hope he runs with it!

As an aside, much depressed about only reading his article in PCMag every-other issue lately. He knows his audience, and he knows way more than them (us, erm, uh, me, anyway), about things that would probably interest them, and he brilliantly researches, refines and condenses the best information regarding the subjects of his articles — it’s just invaluable. Maybe that’s the problem. Invaluables are too often underappreciated.

  5. Bryan says:

    T.C. Moore –

I can’t think of anyone who’s doing comparative reviews of all the blog/cms packages out there. But you can do your own comparative review at http://opensourcecms.com/ – a nifty site where they have a whole bunch of blog/cms packages installed and you can play with them from the admin or user viewpoint (or both!).

    John –

I tried to ‘go to the PC Mag column and tell him to do just that’ – but where the hell do you add comments or email author on that page? If there’s a link I missed it among all the clutter. Does PC Mag really think anyone spends that much time reading the *bottom* of a web page?
