“Jurassic” Tree Planted At London Park

A “Jurassic” tree dating from the dinosaur age and long thought to have been extinct for 200 million years was planted Tuesday at a park in London by British wildlife expert Sir David Attenborough.

One of the rarest trees in the world, the Wollemi Pine was found in Australia by a national parks officer, David Noble, in 1994.

The discovery astonished botanists worldwide who had thought the tree died out millions of years ago.

  1. Ed Campbell says:

The “news” about it is planting one in the UK. For most of the years since the discovery, the exact location was kept secret to discourage trophy collectors.

There have been a couple of fine documentaries showing the stand of trees and the valley they’re in — and deliberately not showing how to get there.

  2. RonD says:

Left alone and undisturbed, the tree has survived for thousands of years in Australia. Now that it has been transplanted to London, I fear its fate is sealed. The tree is doomed. 🙁

So this is the tree version of the Coelacanth “discovery”? 🙂

  4. John Schumann says:

Geez, they found a tree? I’d rather find money.

Remember when Jed Clampett found “black gold” (Texas Tea)? Well, it seems that they’ve found a whole new oilfield in Saudi Arabia:

In other news, “The managing director of the Moroccan Office of Hydrocarbons and Mining (ONHYM), Amina Benkhadra, has said that Morocco is more optimistic over finding oil offshore, after neighboring Mauritania found oil in its territory. ”

Totally off topic, but such a nice coincidence – for me, at least.

I also found a tree today! A tree where I played when I was a kid, more than 30 years ago! I haven’t been there since 1977!!! So I had to walk and walk, everything looked different – pinetrees grow fast – But then I found it! It was still there, and all the trees around it were still alive, and almost as I remembered them!! I am amazed it still lives, it looks so weak! It’s amost fallen, and it’s been like that since I remember – it was felled by a strong wind even before I was born, in the fifties, I think! But with any luck it will still be there when I die, hopefully of very old age. Today I went back to my childhood. You can see it in my homepage.

Trees live forever! There should be more of them – kids don’t see them anymore, let alone play in them!
