Baffling on so many levels.

U.S. Press Perpetuates Taiwan Myths :: AO — Here is an interesting essay on the situation between Taiwan and mainland China. It’s got excellent information and a good perspective although it’ s a little hard to swallow whole. The base argument is that Formosa (aka Taiwan) was always all over the road regarding who owned it and who the people were loyal to. Read the entire essay then ask youself the simple question: if all this is so true then why does Taiwan call itself China? As in the “Republic of China?” The argument makes no sense with this simple fact staring you in the face. Also consider the fact that the Chinese people in general think in longer term increments than Westerners. Even their anniversaries tend to be base-12 rather than base-ten in determining importance.

There are also some editing issues such as with these two sentences?

Fact: More than 85% of Taiwan’s population of 23 million is Taiwanese, not Chinese. Most of the Chinese in Taiwan today came to the country with Chang Kai-Chek’s Kuomintang (KMT) army in 1949, or are their descendants. The Taiwanese, on the other hand, developed as a separate culture on the island for hundreds of years

I just can’t tell what this means.

Still it’s better than the useless pap we are fed by big media.

  1. Bryan says:

The sentence you quote is a bit awkward, but pretty clear.

It says that 85% of the people in taiwan are “Taiwanese”

    the remaining 15% are “Chinese”

of those 15% Chinese, most of them are either:
    a) people who come over in 1949, or
    b) the decendants of (a)

The 85% that are Taiwanese have seperate on their island for hundreds of years.
