LONDON (Reuters) – If you think video games are engrossing now, just wait: PlayStation maker Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory information directly into the brain.
The technique could one day be used to create videogames in which you can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf.
The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce “sensory experiences” such as smells, sounds and images.
“The pulsed ultrasonic signal alters the neural timing in the cortex,” the patent states. “No invasive surgery is needed to assist a person, such as a blind person, to view live and/or recorded images or hear sounds.”
Well now, this is very cool, but your not coming near my brain with that thing. I can see it for blind or deaf people as I would imagine that some of them would be willing to undergo certain risks to have these experiences, but not me.
I have bipolar disorder, which is a chemical imbalence in the brain, and I can tell you that your brain being sick is one of the worst things that can happen to you. Doctors have no idea how to fix it, in spite of what literature and commercials will tell you . (The medications are all based on lucky guesses.) If there was even the slightest chance of some beam screwing up your brain it is entirely not worth it.
Come on, get a grip. No one is going to use such technology in a commercial product until all of society undergoes some enormous change.
If Sony used this technology in a product, they would be sued by everyone whose brain did anything bad after playing the game.
“SONY MADE ME DO IT!”
“Sony gave me that cancer!”
“I would have known to fire that embezzler if Sony hadn’t addled my brain!”
The liability exposure is a bout a billion billion time worse than that business with screen flashes causing convulsions.

Maybe Sony will also come up with trans-cranial magnetic stimulation devices that will enable you to play games with your deceased loved ones or even God Himself… 🙂
