Transcript: Bush, Fox, and Martin Joint Press Conference (washingtonpost.com) — If you have to register to read this thing, please do it. This is a supposed transctipt printed in the Washington Post or just online, I can’t tell. As such it is the single biggest piece of crap I have ever seen. It makes no sense. Bush is talking to himself and talking about his “ministers.” It might be interesting if we actually knew what was going on here. Was this posted on the graveyard shift by an intern?
An example follows:
BUSH: We’ve got a lot to do. And so we charged our ministers with the task of figuring out how best to keep these relationships vibrant and strong.
And I appreciate the commitment of the prime minister and the president toward a spirit of partnership to outlast whatever politics may occur, that puts in place a firm commitment to markets and democracy and freedom and trade and mutual prosperity and mutual security.
BUSH: And so, I want to welcome our friends. After we go through this exercise of democracy, of me answering your questions, I’m looking forward to hosting them to the ranch for a little lunch and a further discussion.
Apparently there were no Spanish translators on hand. I wonder if Fox just read his laundry list or rattled on about plans of American invasion. Doesn’t jive with the Post’s standards.
He seems to have been introducing the joint press conference with the PM of Canada, and the presiendt of Mexico. By “ministers” he unduobtedly meant cabinet secretaries, which most of the rest of the world calls “ministers”, and cabinet-level meetings are often called ministerial meetings.
Add that terminological twist to our President’s continuing losing struggle with the English language, and you indeed have something that sounds weird on first hearing or reading. Perhaps they had a more garbled and less complete version up earlier when you reviewd it, and the context wasn’t clear. I’ve seen that on the WP site in when they report wire service feed. They’ll often have a preliminary limited, sometimes garbled, version up minutes or hours ahead of the finished version
From the language and patterns it looks like the Post cut-and-pasted the English translation of the Mexican transcription.
The White House transcript is here.
I’d be more concerned about Bush’s overall goal, his pledge to Fox, and the general feeling of getting closer and closer to an EU-style system than the words used.
These people appear to be all spaced out. They are putting chips in people, starting too many oil fires and getting spread real thin! This isn’t going to last much longer. Love the blog here John, you might want to go high end with the ads. The GADS are selling free stuff again.
Your pal,
Furby
