Expensive litter: Tossed cigarette ignites SUV

The 20-year-old San Francisco resident was rolling across the upper deck of the Bay Bridge at 10:40 a.m., smoking a cigarette. When he got to Harrison Street, he rolled down the window of his white 2004 Ford Expedition SUV and tossed out the butt.

Instead of bounding along the pavement, however, the still-lit cigarette blew back in and set the interior of his $30,000 SUV ablaze.

Black smoke filled the vehicle. Fish pulled over to the far left-hand lane about 100 feet from the Harrison Street exit and leaped from the Expedition, but instead of putting the SUV in park, he left it in neutral.

The flaming Expedition rolled driverless into a guard rail by the exit, where it crashed to a stop and burned to the frame.

  1. Bryan says:

Serves him right for littering with a flaming piece of trash.

Throwing burning embers out the window is wrong on several levels, and in CA is subject to a $1000.00 fine.

I hope his insurance doesn’t pay.

  2. meetsy says:

maybe the kid should re-think smoking and SUV’s……

I wonder if they have an Xbox at home. It could get worse!
We are calling it Firebox. I think that these things were Made in Mexico to prove that NAFTA could save the U.S. consumer a buck. They cut corners on the cords. I checked the Xbox site http://www.microsoft.com/xbox/ No recall information on the page. It must not be a big deal to Microsoft. You didn’t cover this John or maybe you did and I missed it. Do you have a Firebox?

  4. Jason says:

As biker and runner, I ‘ve been hit by butt tossers many times. Friggin’ annoying.

I’m sure that NY state has an applicable litter law, but they enforce it about as much as they do the no talking on cell phone while driving law.

    oh well…

Recycling news from Fark.com = frowned on but acceptable.

Recycling puns from Fark.com in reference to the same article = unacceptable.

  6. site admin says:

A..the article came from the SF Gate..I do not read Fark.com.

    B. The pun came from the SF Gate — it was on their front page linking to the article. So what’s it got to do with Fark .com? How am I “recycling” from them?

So basically they are suckering you into believing they wrote the pun. Then having you stooge for them? Hmm.

  7. Hank says:

I have to say… this article warmed my heart.

I am SO sick of smokers who think the world is their ash tray.

If I knew him, maybe I could feel a little sad for his loss but I figure better his SUV than in the face of some poor motorcyclist behind him.

    5. poster….uhh, SF Gate had it first…as it HAPPENED IN SF, duh, at 10am And, it was widely reported and published LOCALLY before it hit any BLOG. Sheesh. (btw: It wasn’t posted to fark until 4:19 pm through an ACTION NEWS 6 in PA…for godssakes! –if you know how to read– but, on the SF Gate website at 1p.m. It hit Daily Times Pakistan a few hours ago.) And, the original SF GATE HEADLINE was the same thing as Dvorak.org. I hardly think that SF Gate OR Dvorak copied Fark as it’s one of the lamest sites on the web. Try Metafilter if you want some intelligent posts.

  9. Jim says:

John must of been in a state of flow.
You have fire and you have ICE.
Go build a timeline about the story. It’s not like that it is that big of a deal. With all these post, you would think John just broke the Hindenburg story or something. Wow! Get a life or a blog or something. Buy a drum set.
