Scotsman.com News – Latest News – Ministers Accused over ‘Creationist Nonsense’ in Schools — Here’s what the world is starting to think of us — we’re now world class morons. We may as well practice Voodoo while we’re at it.
The Government was accused today of allowing the introduction of “the worst features of American fundamentalist, anti-science, pseudo-science, nonsense” into education in schools.
Lord Taverne replied: “Since the Government is in favour of allowing choice between sense and nonsense, will it also allow children to be taught that the earth is flat and that the sun goes around the earth?
“Since there is a crisis in maths teaching in schools, and some university chemistry departments are closing down, will the Government also offer as an alternative the teaching of astrology and alchemy?
Meanwhile, NewsMax pundit Steve Farrell (associate professor of political economy at George Wythe College) pushes the creationist agenda here. You’ll note his credentials and the associate professor moniker. This college, founded in 1991, had a grand total of 65 real students in 2002 along with some correspondence students. Farrell probably calls himself Doctor Ferrell or, worse, Herr Doktor!
no doubt at all that the Universe was created by a Supreme Being, not by chance, not by evolution, not according to the obtuse theories of a class of men who demean themselves (and the rest of us with them) by supposing mankind to be the lowly descendents of amoebas and apes, rather than the literal offspring of God.
Talk about setting the sights of our children low!
Thomas JeffersonPerhaps the most educated man in this nation’s history, Thomas Jefferson – a scientist of the first magnitude in so many areas of inquiry – saw in the Universe what your children and my children are not permitted to hear, to consider, or endeavor to prove…
All, of this, presupposes that the world began less than 10,000 years ago and the dinosaurs, distant stars and all are a huge hoax put in place to trick us! And who thinks they evovled from todays amoeba? Not me.
I only bring this link up because in it Farrell pushes the whole argument into some sort of weird WWJD — what would Jefferson do? He uses Thomas Jefferson as the model for right thinking. And it WAS right thinking, in 1780! Jefferson wasn’t an evolutionist, that’s for sure! Since Jefferson was dead by the time Darwin first made his voyages on the Beagle, it would have been amazing if Jefferson was, indeed, into evolution. There is a thing known as progress and I would argue that Jefferson would hardly be unscientific and superstitious in this day and age of scientific method.. Ferrell and his NewsMax bretheren should read more Jefferson rather than pretending to be Jefferson. Here’s a good quote to be considered.
Shake off all fears and servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear. — – Thomas Jefferson, 1787
Yikes!! He said that!?!?
I think most people would be surprised to find out that many of the founding fathers were Deists. People have always assumed that people like Paine, Washington and Jefferson were die-hard Christians when in fact that is not the case. While Jefferson tended to be more Christian than either Washington or Paine, he was heavily influenced by deism and tended in that direction as evidenced by your quote.
Deists believe in a “light-switch” universe where the creator sets everything in motion and then provides us the tools to learn about the nature of universe on our own. Most of the founding fathers, Paine especially, found the bible to be a ridiculous source of information (see Age of Reason). They were men that felt that science, specifically the tangible, should triumph.
That creationists would quote Jefferson as supporting their position is further evidence of their disconnect with reality. We have earned and deserve the ridicule from other countries in regards to our pre-university education system. (Our university system is still regarded as one of the best in world.)
Until we fix the education system itself, we will continue to be the laughing stock of the world. IMO, that means changing the elementary, junior-high and high school system to one where the schools compete for students.
I like the analogy “Should we also teach kids the merit of the theory that the Earth is flat”. Evolution is fact.
Interesting, isn’t evolution a theory? If you can prove it, then do or else stop whining. Jugemental and bigotted Nazis like you always demand everyone believe exactly as you do. If you’re right then prove it and remove the theory adjective, otherwise be open minded and listen. You might as well as get used to having someone else above you in every aspect of life, because that’s the way it is.
Evolution is the myth of our time just as Creation was for past generations before Darwin and Mythology was for the Greeks and Romans. It is just the current best way to explain MAN in this mysterious universe with all the tools that are available.
>>”Interesting, isn’t evolution a theory?
Yes, it is a *scientific* theory which is not the same thing as the vernacular meaning of the word. It is a scientific theory much like gravity and electricity. Just as there is overwhelming proof for the theory of gravity and electricity, such is the case for evolution.
