Unbeknownst to much of Seattle, Beacon Hill has been, until recently, host to a “Tent City” of some 80 or so homeless folks since June, 2000. It is largely unknown to most of Seattle because 1) it was, until January 21, 2001, located on Beacon Hill, a place that generally doesn’t draw much attention, and 2) acknowledging that such a place exists might just mean that you’d have to think about and/or deal with it.

  1. Robert Dybas says:

Unbeknownst to much of Seattle – hardly –
if one were to google “tent city seattle” there are over 340,000 hits.
this is tent city 4 or 5, an ongoing “NIMBY” battle.
front page headlines almost every week –
churches vs schools vs “homeless” vs neighbors –
an effort to move the “homeless” from downtown seattle to the suburbs?
    24 hour police patrols.
secret negotiations for the next location.
a modern soap opera played out in the headlines of the daily papers.
