Since the election there has been an immediate resurgence of “redneck” humor — the sociologies behind this are obvious. The collective unconscious of the Kerry supporters need to psychologically marginalize the winners since they cannot fathom that Kerry lost. I cannot actually believe how poorly the Kerry supporters have reacted to this loss. It’s as if their world has collapsed. They are now exhibiting true grief!

Instead of trying to understand it (after all, they are supposed to be the thinking people) they are acting like the bereaved. The jokes are used to blame it all on the stupidity of the electorate – them damned red states, including the entire South. This is actually the second stage of the five stages of grief – anger. Humor is often an angry response to things. The first stage of grief is denial. Denial came in the form of claiming that this was a rigged election. I can’t imagine what this will be like when these people get depressed for real! (stage 4). Here are some examples of the anger phase. At least this phase is funny.

The underlying message, though, is that these pictures and jokes are really showing us who voted for Bush and how dumb they are. I always thought that the progressives and the left were not into stereotyping. Hmm. I guess they are now!

This material (some old) that began recirculating after the election.

  1. Anonymously says:

When have the supporters of a loser in a presidential election behaved differently? What’s so poor about the reaction of Kerry supporters? Name some names and say why they shouldn’t be upset after all their efforts they are behaving inappropriately (I trust you’ll not highlight the rantings of some lone blogger and stick to the mainstream Kerry supporters).

I mean, were Bush 41’s supporters troopers when he lost? Did they rally behind Clinton or did they support years of investigations that led nowhere and cost millions of dollars?

You say, “cannot actually believe how poorly the Kerry supporters have reacted to this loss,” yet in the same breath you point out the fact that Kerry supporters are behaving pretty predictably (web site with the stages of grief and all that). What is so unbelievable? What hasn’t been predictable?

  2. They left out my favorite country song:

You’re the Kind of Girl I Can’t Get Over (So Get Up and Answer the Phone)

  3. Dan Collins says:

Dvorak should check out GregPalast.com he is an american working for the BBC.He details how the election was stolen in Ohio and New Mexico. The Dems have to become as big of political hard asses as the Republicans are.If you google wis.public radio they have a number of shows and interviews about Palast. He said today that the media wont report these things because of the control Was hington exerts over their licenseing.Check out the hacker blogs they are planning to disrupt the next election because this one was stolen w/computers.

  4. Ed Campbell says:

Since you included my portion of the Left, I’d have to declaim your use of Progressive, John. More typical, would be Michael Moore — who pokes as much fun at Democrats as Republikans [your word, remember?].

The day after the election, the folks who got of bed, got dressed, and moved on to the next stage of fighting back against Bush’s “mandate” — were moveon, org, truemajority.org and michaelmoore.com. At least, those were the people I heard from via email. They weren’t sitting around, crying in their beer.

Leave that for true believers in the “two-party system”. Those are the folks for whom a national election is a religious experience.

  5. Mike Voice says:

Taken out of context – it’s hard to see how any of the examples wouldn’t fit nicely into a Jeff Foxworthy monologue – or a skit on his Blue Collar TV series.

If this is the best they got, the republicans have nothing to worry about.

  6. K B says:

The problem with trying to use such material against Southerners is that Southerners are not only capable of but are eager to laugh at their own foibles. There are some parts of the country– I won’t name them– that could take a lesson from this. [But I hear Frank Sinatra singing in the background, if that helps. 😉 ]

  7. Mike Voice says:

The more I think about it, though, this just plays into the stereotype of the liberals being “elitist”. ðŸ™

  8. Frank IBC says:

I see Dan Collins is still stuck in Stage #1 (Denial).

I assume that the “studies” to which he refers, are those which claim that the numbers of Bush votes in Ohio exceed the number of registered Republicans in that state. Registered Democrats and Independents voting for Bush…what an inconceivable concept.

For an example of those in Stage #4 (Depression), I refer you to the people on the “I’m Sorry” project.

  9. K B says:

“The more I think about it, though, this just plays into the stereotype of the liberals being ‘elitist’.” — Mike Voice

What elitists don’t understand about Southerners is that when we use duct tape to hold a bumper onto an aging car, we know it is hilarious. That’s one of the reasons we do it. The other reason is that it *works*. 🙂
By contrast, when northerners suggest how duct tape should be used, they wind up suggesting that it is a good tool to protect oneself from terrorism. Doh! Plus, their application has no humor, no *style* at all.
I guess when all is said and done, a good measure of the difference between Northerners and Southerners is their understanding of what duct tape is good for, and what it is not. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  10. Frank IBC says:

You can have the Blues in Memphis.

You can have the Blues in N’awlins.

You can have the Blues in Georgia.

But you can’t have the Blues in Boston.
