LinuxWorld – Best of Show. Congrats to Firefox and others..

  1. Ed Campbell says:

I switched to Firefox as part of rewatting my whole system, from wi-fi network to browser and office suite, away from Microsoft after 21 years. Whether or not offshoring is the essential reason, lousy technical support became the convincer.

Firefox rocks! Not only is it more functional and responsive than IE, the constant patches to Internet Explorer drive site administrators bonkers. Another site I visit with enough frequency to be able to email the administrators on a 1st-name basis [with their typos] — is designed to function best with IE. Yet, in a recent series of tests, functionality with the original Mozilla browser — and with Firefox — outperformed Internet Explorer.

I’m not convinced that the religious devotion some have to open source is the fountainhead of such well-behaved software. I think old fashioned rules about compact well-written code may have more to do with it. But, the end result certainly is a better product than anything Microsoft has cooked up after several iterations and beaucoup patches.
