My latest column at Marketwatch uncharacteristically compliments the company. At least people would think it is uncharacteristic. When I was asked to do something on Microsoft’s constant and apparently wasteful acquisitions, I think it was expected that I do a negative piece. As in: God look at all the money they are wasting. I thought about it looking for a new angle when I realized their entire strategy since the beginning was this “Derive and Acquire” model. Since they were pocketing a billion a month who could criticize it? Not me.

I love the new Blog John. Maybe once your Blog gets enough traffic and business is picking up Microsoft will make you an offer you can’t refuse. Will you sell your Blog for $5 Million? Blogging seems to be one of the few areas of personal computing Microsoft hasn’t gobbled up, yet! They have a big cash problem. It’s ironic that many of the major U.S. airlines are going broke like many U.S. city and state governments are, and Microsoft can’t figure out what to do with all the cash they’ve hoarded. Maybe they can help bail out California. The market was down today. I heard today that the fastest growing segment of the population going into bankruptcy is the over 65 group. I know some people running businesses without any PC’s, who are doing very well. They just laugh about computers and keep on keeping on. I guess it’s like cable TV, in that you can live without it and still have a good standard of living. Windows makes being poor so much richer. Gramps just got a PC and can’t figure out why the START button is used to turn the machine off.

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering, “What the hell happened?”

Microsoft owes refunds to we consumers. Making a claim for refunds is time wasted for little gain. So, the shareholders get our pennies. My retirement 457 has Microsoft mentioned in a fund prospectus. I got my software refund the easy way via dividend! JDvorak, keep linking from your .org blog because cbs.marketwatch is user unfriendly. I can’t locate you there without your external link. Tough luck.
