Here’s is another interesting stat from my statcounter: screen resolution of the last 100 visitors. I’ve been monitoring this for a week and this table is typical except there is usually one 640×480 user out of 100. This indicates that the standard screen resolution is at 1024×768 and getting bigger. This means that 800 wide is more than adequate as the minimum standard for web pages. Many people have been sticking with the old 640 wide size which is fading. Again this may be a little skewed by my audience.

Not running a website at the moment; but, my conclusions similar enough. Frankly, I thought about getting away from the 800×600 crowd.

My own monitor is capable of more than 1024×768. These old eyes aren’t.

Yes, but for a lot of people like myself, the purpose of getting a bigger screen is to be able to see more documents at the same time and not so that web developers can make wider pages. I think it’s regrettable that the 640 size is not being as widely used. And in fact, if your blog or PC Mag with its column of ads is any indication , web designers aren’t exactly providing viewers with valuable content by widening the page. Rather, the extra 160 is being used almost exclusively for advertising space. No thanks.
