• WorldPages--individuals, businesses or business type in U.S. You can limit city/state/province/postal code. Very fast and you can create a map of an address' vicinity
  

• AnyWho Toll-Free Directory--search by business name or category, browse by category. Also includes reverse lookup and e-mail lookup. Formerly the AT&T Directory
  
• Internet 800 Directory--"hundreds of thousands" of 800 and 888 listings, including all carriers. Search by name, product or number
  
• Bigfoot--white page, e-mail and yellow page search. You can also search on a first name in a city though results seem incomplete. Find People gets you to a background/criminal history check--fee-based and undoubtedly incomplete
  
• InfoSpace--100 million+ listings in U.S. Yellow pages, white pages, companies online, classifieds, federal/state/local government listings with councils' members and phone numbers. Also white pages for many other nations; reverse lookup for US and Canada
  
• GTE/Verizon SuperPages--nationwide yellow and white pages. Click on Detailed Search for reverse lookup. The former BigYellow address now goes to this site
  
• Switchboard--nationwide residential, business and reverse number search
  
• Questdex Yellow & White Pages--formerly U.S. West. Quite useful for searching a business category in a city or state. Other features include reverse search (click on Advanced Search) and community links by city. Oh, they want you to register now
  
• SMARTpages--nationwide yellow and white pages, reverse search, and option to search within an area
  
• The Ultimate White Pages--actually a one-site location for the other national phonebooks; search by name or phone number
  
• D & B Small Business Solutions: Business Credit Reports, Collection Services, Marketing Lists--don't let the title put you off: This subset of D & B's database is a free nationwide business search by name/geography, type/geography or DUNS number. Information on a business will include address, contacts and estimates of size/sales. Search by type is picky--if your heading is off it won't find anything (i.e., it wants Book Stores, not Bookstores), so it will help to find headings by first searching a known business of a type
  
• U.S. Blue Pages--intended as overall telephone directory for the government, searchable by agency/keyword and allowing you to narrow by geography. Search by geography without keywords doesn't work, despite what they say, and search results have a disconcerting number of 1-800-USELESS hits
  
• Fonefinder--an odd reverse directory that allows you to input area code, prefix and city for U.S.; otherwise, whole telephone number and country name. Doesn't get to individual name level, but uses could include listing possible prefixes for a given area, and what telecom company services them
  
• Free Online Lookups--something called Melissa Data has a bunch of locator tools for places, ZIPs and telephone. Under Phone Numbers is a tool allowing you to match an area code, prefix or entire number to a location rather than a name; for unlisteds this would narrow the area
  
• Infobel International Directories--directory of international directories. Many are fax or trade directories. You must first select a country from the pull-down menu

State & Regional

• AreaConnect--individual white and yellow pages for 3,500+ U.S. cities. Searches for people or businesses by name work well; yellow page category search loads the results with online businesses unconnected with the place
  

• Metrobot--interesting business name/address search not only retrieves address and phone number, but you can create a map of the business' street identifying all the nearbys. So far, covers a dozen of the larger U.S. cities

International: North and South America

• Canada 411--search for individuals by name, address or phone number. From Yellow Pages Group but covers most operators. Business Search is by name or category, or reverse by address or phone number. CanadaTollFree covers 800s
  

• Yellow.ca--Canadian business pages, search by business name or classification. Also includes search for individuals, or reverse lookup
  
• SuperPages.ca: People Finder--12 million listings from all phone companies, by name/location, with reverse lookup by phone number. Business Finder searches by name/location; also advanced (reverse) search by address or phone number. Campus Directory finds businesses (including apartments) near colleges
  
• My TELUS--Canadian people and business finder, blue pages for British Columbia
  
• Seccion Amarilla-Indice--Mexican yellow pages, with link to White Pages
  
• Amarillas.com--business searches for Mexico and larger South American nations
  
• PaginasAmarillas.com--yellow and white pages for Latin America. Search all nations or select directory for Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Rep. Dominicana or Venezuela
  
• Caribbean Yellow Pages--overall directory for all the islands including Cuba (and Florida!) has, in roundabout fashion, both search and browse functions. Keyword search does headings rather than names; thus, Smith will retrieve locksmiths. Looks useful if you need a sampling, rather than complete list, of those providing a service or product
  
• First Yellow--business directory for the Caribbean, with browse of category listings for each island, with address and phone provided for each business. Main page also has business name search, with category and place as limiters
  
• Jamaica Online Directory--a useful site, though with eccentricities. First choose either Kingston/St. Andrew or All other areas. You then choose a yellow page search, or what amounts to a browse of residential or business white pages, or yellow pages by heading. Within these, the name search doesn't seem to work, but you can jump to a page number, in effect paging through what visually resembles a print directory. You could do worse
  
• Bermuda Yellow Pages Online--like Jamaica directory above, this visually resembles a complete print directory, but the whitepage search by name and yellowpage search by category both work, making this site easy to use
  
• Cuba: Paginas Amarillas--by name or category; Paginas Blancas--by name with limiters for occupation, province, etc.
  
• Paginas Doradas--yellow pages for Argentina, searchable by business name or type
  
• SuperPagesCR.com--yellow pages for Costa Rica. White pages are in here too, under People Pages
  
• Peru: Yellow Pages and White Pages
  
• Bolivia: Yellow Pages by category or company name. Guia Telefonica en Linea is white pages for people or companies
  
• Chile Business Directory--not searchable but browsable
  
• laguia.com.ve--business search for Venezuela, by name or type
  
• Que Hubo! The Colombian Yellow Pages--strange search brings up combination of directory-type listings and webpages
  
• Guias Telefonicas del Uruguay--business search by name/region or heading/region, in Spanish
  
• Telesur--sandwiched between e-mail searches by name and address is a telephone search for Surinam by name, in Dutch

International: Europe

• Europages Business Directory--half a million companies in 30 countries. Search by product or company name
  

• Maporama.com--high-quality mapper, itinerary product, postal code finder and residential/business telephone book for Europe
  
• British Telecom--ten free enquires per day, registration allows up to 200 more free per month. BT wraps up the Worst Online Telephone Directory award once again
  
• Infobel UK--nonmasochists wanting to search the UK will prefer Infobel's white and yellow pages. With residential search, full name seems to be required
  
• AskAlix: Business Directory for the United Kingdom--very good business directory for the UK, also includes Northern Ireland. Search by name, product or service, or any keyword combination. "It takes a lot less clix"...they're right
  
• Eircom/Golden Pages--business and residential directory for Republic of Ireland. Business search is by name or type; inexact wording on the latter will helpfully bring up the possible official headings. Either search can be limited by town/county
  
• pagesjaunes--the former Les Pages Zoom. French electronic phonebook works quickly and easily. If only the official provider across the channel would emulate this
  
• InfoBel--four million businesses and residences in Belgium
  
• Pagine Gialle--Italian yellow pages
  
• Paginas Amarillas--Spain's yellow pages, 1,500,000 listings y una ventana pop-up
  
• 118Net--white pages for Portugal
  
• Paginas Amarelas--yellow pages for Portugal, by company name or type
  
• Branchenauskunft--business directory for Germany by name, and/or branche (industry) and ort (place). Links to a residential Telefonauskunft
  
• Das Telefonbuch--popup-laden but, on surface, easy-to-use residential book for Germany. Limit by place is problematic, with some places not working under either German or English forms; they suggest using postal code
  
• Swiss Yellow Pages and White Pages--can I say "Swiss precision?" This directory seems to have it
  
• Matav Online--white pages for people and companies in Hungary, in Hungarian
  
• Tele Danmark--Danish. Individuals and businesses, by name or reverse number search
  
• Simaskra.is--directory for Iceland. I'm not sure what order you enter the name in
  
• ETB: Einfache Suche: Austrian White Pages--Name is surname, Vorname is first name, Ort is place
  
• Gula Sidorna--Swedish yellow pages, in Swedish
  
• Gule Sider Internett--Norwegian business search by name or category
  
• De Telefoongids: Zoeken op Naam--personal and business name search for Netherlands
  
• Editus Luxembourg--white and yellow pages. Look for them under the Welcome bar
  
• Rusmarket.com--Russian business directory, just businesses with webpages. It ain't much, but it's what's available
  
• Yellow Pages Tbilisi--search business name/keyword or browse by category in this ramshackle directory for Georgia. Far from comprehensive, but likeable
  
• Bol.bg: Bulgarian White Pages/Directory--if your machine and/or brain can deal with cyrillic, you're in business
  
• Spyur: Company Register of Armenia--business directory allows search by company name or product/service. Entry for each company is quite detailed. The Yellow Pages allows browse by category or alphabetical browse by company

International: Asia and Oceania

• Australian White pages and Yellow Pages
  

• Telecom New Zealand: White Pages and Yellow Pages. Search for people by name, businesses by name or category. You can narrow by region or search the whole country
  
• The White Pages of Fiji--simple name search, for all of Fiji or by city
  
• 411.guam.net--barebones interface to residential, business and government search for Guam, has been "under construction" for some time
  
• India Yellow Pages--since the likeable 1 Billion Indians domain is now a porn site, things like this are what's left. Browse only
  
• Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd: Online Telephone Directory--Indian state phonebooks with varying interfaces and update schedules
  
• PhonePK KalDirectory--directory for Pakistan seems to include both businesses (Company Search) and people (upper form, by city + name or phone number). Each is a two-step process in which you create the form, then input your search. Each city includes a map and prayer times (probably voicemail only then)
  
• Bangladesh Yellow Pages--search by company name, browse by category. White pages section allows search by name. Both sections have advanced search to refine results by business and/or locality
  
• Government of Tibet in Exile--admittedly a "niche" site, this includes a Tibetan telephone directory covering offices, representatives, monasteries, schools and individuals in India, Nepal and Bhutan, with directories of associations in other continents
  
• Sri Lanka Telecom Directory--persons by name, businesses by name or broad category, limitable by region
  
• China Big--I've found this a quite efficient yellow pages for China, searchable by company name or business type, with full names and addresses given. Unfortunately the button for the English version has gone missing
  
• China Telecom Yellow Pages--this one is in English, seems to only cover Shanghai
  
• YP Business--Hong Kong yellow pages in English. Search by company name or type/product
  
• Macau Yellow Pages--in English, by company or category. Interface resembles crowded grocery shelves
  
• Townpage: Japan Telephone Directory--English version of Japanese yellow pages, searchable by company name or business type. For Japanese version, chop English off the URL
  
• Korea YellowPages Directory--another one, in English, that seems to do the job
  
• Korea Infogate--combination business pages and category browse, in English
  
• Indonesian YellowPages on Internet--search by company name, category or product. You can choose a category from the alphabetical list, then limit to a city to search
  
• Internet Yellow Pages: Singapore--easy search in English by company name or type. Links to residential search by name/area
  
• Thailand YellowPages--search by business name or category. Entering a general word in the category box will bring up a list of headings. This screen lets you search for people--click Personal
  
• Pinoysearch.com--white and yellow pages for the Philippines, also listing Filipinos in the U.S. and Canada. You can erase Metro Manila from the State/Province box. Initial results show address, click on name for telephone number
  
• my Yellow Pages--directory for Malaysia also includes residential listings, for entire country or by state
  
• Myanmar Yellow Pages--amazingly commercial-looking site, in English, is not searchable but can be browsed in well-crossreferenced category list
  
• Vietbig: Vietnam Yellow Pages--search by company, product, brand or telephone number. Also, browse listings in industrial parks, business centers and the like
  
• Cambodia Yellow Pages--browsable by category, searchable by almost anything
  
• Samoa: White Pages and Yellow Pages--simple search in both

International: Africa and Middle East

• Brabys: Southern African Business Directory--businesses by name or category in South Africa as a whole or particular states, other nations in southern part of continent (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe). Keyword in Business Category will bring up list of correct headings
  

• Les Pages Jaunes Afrique--pan-African yellow pages searches by business name or type. Select one country as limiter
  
• Menara: Le Portail du Maroc--white pages for Morocco in French, input last name/first name, nationwide or limited by locality. Also, Yellow Pages by search, or there's a Guide des Categories
  
• Yellow Pages Kenya--business search by name or type. A search for people is at the bottom, though it only provides telephone numbers, no addresses
  
• Les Pages Jaunes--yellow pages for Algeria by company name (raison sociale), or business (activite) which is also browsable by letter. Pages Blanches works similarly
  
• Annuaire Telephonique Republique Rwanda--yellow pages for Rwanda in French uses same searchbox for business name, address, category or number. Guide des Activites gives alphabetical list of categories. Pages Blanches uses similar interface
  
• Israel's Yellow Pages--this site is an umbrella for several directories, none well explained. Complete Israeli Yellow Pages is in Hebrew. The Internet Israeli Yellow Pages is in English but is much less comprehensive
  
• Bezeq 144--Israeli directory. You'll likely have to accept download of software to read characters
  
• D Website: Golden Pages--hiphop-sounding-named business directory for Israel by category or business (name), in English
  
• AME Info Middle East Business Directory--search by company name or activity in all the Arab middle east, or limit to a nation
  
• Egypt Yellow Pages--Cairo and Alexandria anyway, in English or Arabic. Search by business name/brand/keyword, or search or browse by category
  
• Turk Telekom--Turkish white pages, in Turkish
  
• Turkindex--business directory for Turkey with search/headings in English, listings in Turkish. Works best to select category, subcategory, then locality

Specialized

• Inmarsat--directory for contacting ships at sea. Apparently most are equipped with Inmarsat, an organization that makes shore-to-ship calling/faxing/etc. possible. Search for ship by name
  

• Reverse Directory via Langenberg.com--or actually, links to various services' reverse lookups, by address and/or phone number. R! means clear or reset
  
• Pay Phone Directory--thousands of payphone numbers listed by state/city/address. Greatest number are in Washington, since that's where "El Jefe" apparently resides; a good many for Oregon also
  
• The Payphone Project--cornucopeia of articles, news and directories relating to payphones. Has directories for U.S. states and other countries, though locations are a bit more colloquial ("elevator bank, 7th floor...") than El Jefe's
