Bill Gates Strikes a Pose for Teen Beat Photospread, 1983

[UPDATE: The PC-AT and Mac in the back make this a picture from 1984 or later.]

  1. Lindsay says:

    The horror, the horror ….

  2. g quaglia says:

What a geek! I wonder if there are any of Steve Ballmer laying around. On second thought, I don’t care.

  3. Tom L. says:

Note the Mac in the background of the top pic.

So it must have been at least 1984, unless the Steves sent one up to him early so he could get a head start on ripping off the interface.

  4. By leaning on his desk, does Bill (and his beloved monitor) make sexual insinuation of some sort? The look on his face suggests so.

  5. david says:

A generation ago, naughty pictures were easier to control because they were printed on paper and usually not processed at a photo lab. Indeed, the Polaroid was the start of home-made porn. With the advent of digital cameras and video the birthday suit pictures, “happy moments” caught on cam and youthful indiscretions will come back to haunt our new generation in twenty years when they become public figures. Just imagine the above picture with Bill Gates Jr. in the buff striking a pose with a joystick and X-box.

  6. RonD says:

Is that a Mac, or an IBM PS-1?

  7. John C. Dvorak says:

Looks like a Mac to me..the IBM machine also looks to be an AT machine which is a 1984 machine too. I would have thought you guys would be more inclined to spot that gaffe!

The blibbet logo for msft is accurate for the date 1984.

The is 1984 (or later) for certain.

  8. "-" says:

John’s right about the Mac, the AT, and the logo. But it’s still problematic exactly when the pics were took.

I don’t have my Photoshop with me, or I’d flip Bill’s face. At first glance, he looks like Lennon backwards (left for right).

And Ballmer, of course, would be the Walrus. (Don’t hit me Steve).

  9. g quaglia says:

The more I look at these pictures the more disturbed I feel. Please remove them John.

  10. meetsy says:

He looks a bit…mmm…. “drugged up” to me. Much sleezier than he usually looked, but freshly laundered. (Must have had those “dress him, and wash him” people on the payroll.) In a word: DISTURBING.
Am I the only one who REMEMBERS this photo when it came out? It was a whole spread about the boy wonder (and, SINGLE, too, girls. Wink wink.). But, in 1984 it was a BIG deal that he was on the cover of BOTH Time and Newsweek.
He was IN Cosmo magazine in some small little “feature” about eligible single men, he was in People, he was in a dozen different magazines. There was some huge PR push to wash and dress him, and give face behind the corporation. And, that was the year that they’d announced “windows” at Comdex…like “no really…really, really we ARE…. any minute now…really…just order it, you’ll see….no really” and he was floating all these other “pie-in-the-sky” stuff with what they called expert systems….
    Remember, John?

    meetsy,
your link to the time cover says it has been moved or taken off the web site. Any place else to find it? Thanks.

  12. JoAnn B says:

Poof! Another urban legend bites the dust.

Yes, it’s Gates. No, it wasn’t for “Teen Beat”.

  13. CAT! says:

It’s from 1985, notice the Windows 1 box in the background.
    WHAT A SEXY BEAST!!!!

  14. Wow! At last I got a website from where I can actually obtain useful
data concerning my study and knowledge.
