The Associated Press – 1/31/2007:

Some parts of the Upper Peninsula might be declared disaster areas because of the lack of snow earlier this season.

The Michigan Economic Development Corp. is sounding out local business leaders to determine how winter tourism has fared.

Cathi Cole, an account manager with the agency, said she sent the e-mail inquiries after hearing from a couple of Upper Peninsula businesses about the possibility of government assistance.

If our businesses were adversely affected, we want to make sure they get the help,” Merrill said.

23.——- A local horse race track recently asked the state to allow it to have slot machines. It said that without slot machines it’d go out of business.

I thought: Gee, how many bankrupt businesses would still be in business if they too were allowed to break the law.

A good maxim: If the only way you can stay in business is to break the law, you might as well pack it in.———

GEEE, who told you that slot machines were illegal in Michigan. The casinos in Downtown Detroit are full of LEGAL slot machines. If the casinos can have them, why shouldn’t a perfectly legal business like horse racing have them. They just want to attract more customers to an ailing business.Maybe you should do a little research and get your facts straight before you make dumb smart-alek remarks.

As for the idea of government aid for the tourist industry because of a lack of snow, that’s just ridiculous. Can’t all those good conservative business men up there pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and not depend on the government for handouts!!!

By the way 23 the term is “maxim” not “maximum” DUH!!!!

“The casinos in Downtown Detroit are full of LEGAL slot machines”

They’re not really in Detroit, they’re on a sovereign Indian reservation made legal by the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Not any joe blow in Michigan can set up slot machines. You have to at least be a recognized Indian tribe. For everyone else they’re illegal to have.

“why shouldn’t a perfectly legal business like horse racing have them.”

And why shouldn’t a perfectly legal but near bankrupt dry cleaner get to run a hit-man business on the side too? There are a lot of angry husbands and wives out there who’d love to get rid of their significant others and pay well for the service.

“Maybe you should do a little research and get your facts straight before you make dumb smart-alek remarks.”

Great advice, I strongly suggest you take it next time.

I still have my 51st state license plate hanging in my garage.

  5. Scott Gant says:

Don’t know what area they’re talking about (because I’m too lazy to read the article), but where I am, South-Western Michigan, was basically closed down due to blizzard-like conditions from lake-effect snow just this past Tuesday. Schools were even closed, and they’re almost NEVER closed due to snow around here.

    Stupid Lake Michigan…

  6. Noam Sane says:

Sad snowmobilers. That makes me happy.

  7. Chris says:

Given the recent snow, as well as the highs in the mid teens, we could reawsonably say that winter was late, and not missing.

  8. TheGlobalWarmer says:

RUN!!!!! It’s Global Warming (TM)… we’re all gonna DIE!!!!!!!

  9. SN says:

    32. By the way 23 the term is “maxim” not “maximum” DUH!!!!”

I’m not entirely sure why you are so angry. Maybe you should turn off the computer and take a breather. Go outside and kill a rabbit or something.

But, anyway, thanks for the correction. I guess an even better maxim to live by is not to rely on a spell check without proof reading.

  10. Kipper says:

Oh just great. Leave it to a bunch of hick yoopers to come up with this one.
No wonder people are moving from Michigan. Tell me then, just how is that going to make victims of Katrina and most recently the victims of a Florida tornado disaster feel.

Next thing you know, yoopers will be asking for assistance when there’s no sunshine in summer. E-Gads, get a real job and quit relying on the state you ordinarly could care less about… until it comes time you can expect to get a hand out.

  11. cheese says:

For the record: Look at the snow now: http://www.weatherunderground.com/US/Region/US/SnowDepth.html

The only place east of the rockies showing “red” snow depths is…. yup!

Next thing you know, there will be a call for help because of too much snow.
