When the wife of the hunter who shot it opened the refrigerator door, the duck lifted its head, giving her a scare.The man’s wife “was going to check on the refrigerator because it hadn’t been working right and when she opened the door, it looked up at her,” said Laina Whipple, a receptionist at Killearn Animal Hospital. “She freaked out and told the daughter to take it to the hospital right then and there.”
The 1-pound female ring-neck ended up at Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, where it has been treated since Tuesday for wounds to its wing and leg.
When you read such stories, try not to ask too many questions. If their intent was to kill the duck, why are they trying to save it? If they prefer animal rescue, why did they shoot it? Or maybe there weren’t any disabled ducks handy to rescue, so they…. See, I told you not to ask too many questions.
You’re confounding the actions of two parties here, old bean.

Uh-uh encore. They didn’t say “take the duck to the vet,” she did.
Scenario:
Guy goes out, shoots duck, falsely assumes duck is now ex-duck.
Guy brings duck home while wife not home.
Guy goes away.
Wife comes home, opens fridge, freaks.
Not knowing non-ex-duck’s backstory, wife dispatches non-ex-duck to duck-doc.
See? Easily explained…

maybe they just think that any duck that can survive a gunshot wound and spending 2 days in the chillchest deserves a second chance at life.

I think the hunter needs to be “winged” and put in a fridge.
Something odd about this story. I have never heard of a hunter putting game in a refrigerator without removing the feathers and head.

I am a shooter though – the guys at the Rod & Gun Club are after me to get rid of my Lincoln and buy a dualie….
It appears to be not at all uncommon to refrigerate a “kill” before it can be dressed if there are time issues. (Like wanting to get out and kill more ducks I suppose….)
With an air supply and moderate temperatures I would think that the duck could have survived for a couple days – the cold may have helped a little by slowing it’s metabolism too.
Definitely a strange one though.
(Not to start a flame war but I have no problem with hunting. I just don’t do it. I enjoy killing paper…. And self-defense….)

This is Charlotte’s Web syndrome. Last night it was bacon, today it’s “some pig”. Even if I had shot the duck myself, the will to live of this particular duck would have been impressive enough to take him to the animal hospital.
A good duck is makes a great meal. A farm raised duck has a milder taste. Most duck is overcooked. It should be served medium rare, or it gets too tough. Don’t get me started on geese.
Their only mistake was not killing another few hundred ducks.

For those questions posed I simply have one answer. If the duck got shot and lived 2 days in the freezer then it has suffered enough and has earned it’s life back. Now for the rest it’s dinner time.
This all sounds very strange to me. I have not hunted since I was a kid, but my dad always made sure that the Ducks etc were dead as soon as he got to it. Ever this was a very inexperienced hunter or this is an Urban Legend that is getting past off as real.
I am impressed. It took 17 comments before someone decided to make fun of a Republican, and 18 before the topic turned into a rant about how non-hunters are smarter than hunters.
Fix the duck, return it to the wild, it will enrich it’s species gene pool. Humanity will not likely last another five thousand years, and our successors need to start toughening up now. Ducks are cool, and who says the dominant species has to be sentient? The dinosaurs did a pretty good job, tear assing around until the asteroid snuffed them. Humans are cool that way, it’ll not be a natural calamity that does us in, we’ll do it to ouselves.
