Here is a collection of photographs shot at the Wired Nextfest that occurred last week in the Javits Center in NYC. The event was a blast, and the concepts and devices exhibited gave the attendees a glimpse at facets of a possible future.
Here’s a centaurbot from NASA. The torso is a humanoid robot that can be operated with a telepresence rig by a human operator anywhere.
The device has fully articulated hands, and with its four-wheeled carriage can travel over almost any terrain. It could replace a human astronaut in a mission to a remote location like Mars, or supplement a human mission on the moon.
If you only use the torso, it could provide an extra set of hands on a space station or spacecraft, freeing up valuable air, water, and food for the rest of the human crew.
These dancebots are a little more whimsical, but interesting from a tehnological viewpoint, as they have to interact with a human partner. I don’t know if I’d be that hard up for dancing that I’d want to do it with a robot, but…
Here’s a powered Monocycle called the Wheelsurf that can go up to 30 miles an hour. Cute.
Not all of the kids were there as spectators. Here’s a crew of students showing off their entry into one of the several robotic events held at the exposition.
You can check out some more images from the event HERE.
The monocycle looks fun!
How would the monocycle handle in a rollover crash?
I checked the Wheelsurf site:
Imagine yourself in a centrifuge.
What???
… a single-wheeled , ride-inside conveyance that’s sure to get you noticed…
Yes, but what will people be saying as they point & stare?
The Wheelsurf consists of an inner and an outer frame. The inner frame has three small wheels that make contact with the outer frame. The outer frame is the actual rotating wheel and has a solid rubber tire.
I see no mention of a suspension….
It must be exciting to be barreling-along at 40-km/hr with your forward visibility blocked by the wheel itself… So you have to be leaning your head to one side, or the other, while driving.
Other than that, looks like something fun to roar up & down the beach with! 🙂
That compressed-air exo-suit, and the little submarine look very interesting.
Thanks, Alix.
Nice bazoomage they put on those dancebots.
#5….yeah…if you like your women with Mouse ears!!
Ohh I see FIRST Robotics there! For anyone interested check out http://www.usfirst.org, FIRST Robotics is the most amazing high-school robotics competition I have ever competed in. There are over 1000 high schools competing in the US, Canada, and abroad. It is an amazing program where professional engineers work with high school students to build and create robots for competition in only 6-weeks! Check it out!
RE: The dancebots; dancing is but one form of human interaction, there are others…
