Scotsman.com – Fri 5 May 2006:
BELIEVING that God created the universe in six days is a form of superstitious paganism, the Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno claimed yesterday.
Brother Consolmagno, who works in a Vatican observatory in Arizona and as curator of the Vatican meteorite collection in Italy, said a “destructive myth” had developed in modern society that religion and science were competing ideologies.
He described creationism, whose supporters want it taught in schools alongside evolution, as a “kind of paganism” because it harked back to the days of “nature gods” who were responsible for natural events.
Ok – Origins is a matter of pure, unadulterated faith. Since none of us saw it happen, or is capable of repeating it in a lab, we have to belive what other people think or have told us about it. I believe in a literal interpretation of Moses, others believe Darwin, or Mohammed, or whoever … modern science can provide evidence one way or another towards different viewpoints, but much of that is due to interpretation (I belive both 6-day-ers and evolutionists point to the fossil record as evidence for their side…). History, which is what origins is, cannot be scientifically proved – science merely provides evidence. (think of a criminal trial – the suspect’s fingerprint on the murder weapon only proves he held it at some point, not that he used it to kill the person – it is a strong argument, but not proof). We can argue all we want, but it doesn’t change that its still a matter of faith.
THERE IS A GOD and there is no way God can be denied out of existence. How can skeptics eat their apples and oranges, an smile and say, “there is no God.” It is the height of stupidity. Have you people not realized that while the orange is sweet, you have glands in your tongues that detect their particular flavor. What kind of accident produces that sort of result? Behold the wonders around you and stop rebelling against God who creates every fruit to fill you up and make your heart glad that you are alive. Each morsel of mango that you bite is a message from God that says, “I love you.” Start reading between the lines and stop being foolish.
“THERE IS A GOD”
Great, where is s/he?
“Start reading between the lines and stop being foolish.”
Oh, I get it. you’ve never seem him/her/it either. You’ve only inferred his existence by “reading between the lines.”
So let me get this straight, you believe that this being created us, but hides from us, but also gives us subtle/vague clues as to existence, to make us believe in him, so we can live forever with him. Yeah… that’s certainly not the “height of stupidity.” That’s genius for sure!
Death came into the world through one man’s sin. If so, were there millions of years of death, predators devouring prey, water parasites making the eyes of children go blind, sickness, disease, birth defects for the ancestors of Adam as the myth of natural materialism would have us believe? If death was part of God’s will, why did Jesus call it the last enemy to be conquered? If Eden is but a myth, why did the Word incarnate to save us from original sin? Just after creation, when God looked at his creation and found it to be very good, did he see death, predators devouring prey, water parasites making the eyes of children go blind, sickness, disease, and birth defects? Our pop-culture is being bombarded with neo-gnostic instrumental art which implies the creator is a fumbling demiurge but at the same time the Vatican astronomer is calling the 42% of Americans graced with the God-given childlike faith to accept the revelation that Creation was very good inspite of what we see in this fallen world.
What about logical consistency? Why would the Author of Life, an omniscient, omnipotent, morally perfect being create this morality drama with free will participants to choose between obedience and disobedience; mercy and justice and then limit Himself to the limits of the physical props and scenery? Hint: If you want to understand the meaning of a morality play, spectral analysis of the props and scenery is not going to provide a clue as to what is going on.
there’s no god. This planet is ruled and slowly destructed by violent monkeys who’s brain evolved to such size they know their going to die. That’s why they invent all kinds of gods and after that start killing eachother because of difference of opinion.
Since Pope John Paul about nine years ago announced that the catholic church accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution as official church belief it is not surprising to see the church departing from the biblical account of creation as stated in Genesis1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The Bible clearly states that the carnal worldly mind is incapable of understanding these things because they are spiritually discerned.
